half the album is catchy.
but each of those catchy songs basically sound the same.
the other, non-catchy half, sounds the same, too. 9/29/2010 2:32:31 PM |

it's a good album. I enjoy driving to it. They are definitely becoming an "in" band several months late like Phoenix did earlier this summer. 9/29/2010 3:57:22 PM |

Yeah, cause that's how you can determine the quality of a band. Whether or not someone with "cred" likes them.

i wasn't using that as a comment on their quality
just that phoenix first had hits in the underground in 2000/2001
true, their last album got mainstream attention roughly a year after it was released to wide acclaim in the music media, but they had been a known quantity in indie circles for nearly a decade
mumford & sons may be getting mainstream attention some months removed from their album's initial release, but they are not a popular act in the underground ] 9/29/2010 6:57:03 PM |

so how does this work? does that make them not cool since they aren't popular in the underground?

Yup, and now they can pretty much do whatever they want musically. That's pretty much what every musician wants, right? You hope for commercial success while making the music you want. Sometimes you even "sell out" and make music that people will like so that in the future you can do what you want.
I think that's the part that most "indie" bands don't get. 9/29/2010 7:07:45 PM |

i wouldn't say that. Sometimes i feel like some indie fans think that way, but i think for the most part every artist wants some form of success.]9/29/2010 7:12:11 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
that's just the thing
you can do what you want now without selling out, because you don't need a record company or a studio or even a band to make a record
yes, you hope to be successful enough to not need a job, but technology has progressed to the point that you no longer need to do things you don't want in order to gain access to doing what you'd like to do.
at this point, it's how much you want to make decent art versus how much you want money. there's a choice now, instead of having to take one step to reach the other. 9/29/2010 7:13:55 PM |

boy, that's a lame fucking thing to say.
how does one achieve cred? how does one recognize when someone else has cred? how many cred points are required to level-up on superiority over others?9/29/2010 8:45:55 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
one achieves cred by having good taste
you level up when your criticism is published, and again when it's published nationally
doesn't mean you're right, doesn't mean you're not an asshole, but the fact that other people are willing to support your opinion gives you *gasp* CREDIBILITY 9/29/2010 8:50:05 PM |

i didn't either, but i read it quite a bit. They cover the folksy side of the spectrum a little more which is what i like. I was just curious because i checked and they gave the album in question a 9.1 while Pitchfork gave it a 2.1. 9/29/2010 9:11:07 PM |

i don't see how anyone who listens to a wide variety of music could possibly give this record a 9/10
it's not bad, but it's completely derivative...the arrangements are fine, the songs are tolerable, and if this is your style it's a fine 6 or 7/10 record
but a 9? come on. 9/29/2010 9:17:21 PM |
Jeepin4x4 #Pack9 35780 Posts user info edit post |

I don't know, touting the relative cred-points of different bands seems to undermine a genuine appreciation of music. To me, it a signals a shift in focus towards music culture rather than just music. I'm more interested in how something sounds than how it rates on that day's cool meter. Of course, this dynamic may not actually apply to anyone posting in this thread and even if it did, it only reflects my personal preference for music consumption and discourse.
I do think criticism can be useful and interesting, but for music, I'm not really familiar with any true critics. what I'm aware of is mostly just reviewers. anyone know some solid Critics? 9/29/2010 9:21:34 PM |

i do think the "no one with any cred likes this" argument works for some things
especially for any of the bands/DJs that use electronics and travel on the jam band circuit
no one likes that shit except the hippies that will blindly like anything associated with that scene
i'm looking at you Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Disco Biscuits, Lotus, STS9, Emancipator

^^^ And they're written by people with credibility. That doesn't make their opinions correct, just more valid than some idiot on the street.
^^^^ That brings up a similar question to what you asked me: what's the difference between a reviewer and a critic? Who defines the difference?

I love this album, and I've really enjoyed the band so far. There was a while where I thought I could just listen to this album for a whole year, but it's finally kind of worn off on me. Some repetitive sounds, but the songs are very evocative and there's an attention to lyrics that I think is pretty respectable. I'd see them live if they weren't constantly playing in Europe. 9/30/2010 3:54:24 AM |
