So, I think I want to install a fresh copy of W7 on my laptop, but like an idiot, I never made an install disc of the Windows 7 Student edition I bought back when Digital River had their big special. Of course, you can't download it anymore, so I wondered if anyone had an .iso they could host and let me download, or if they knew if I could use a regular install disc and my activation code. I have the 32-bit version. Thanks for any help or advice you may have. I'm under the impression it's roughly $30 to get a new disc sent to you.

I never used my disk because I don't have Vista. I can mail it to you if you want.

JM, please do mail it to me. It would save me tons of trouble. And, I'm not actually sure if my laptop is 64 bit. Is pretty much everything 64 bit now? I know it's a dumb questions, but how can I check? It's a very low end Acer from about 2-3 years ago (though, it has served me fairly well).

Aspire 4730Z.Also, I don't imagine reinstall is necessary for me to fix my problem, I just can't seem to figure out what it is. It seems like it started with Firefox running slow and hanging/crashing at times, but then that carries over and hangs my entire computer when it happened. Couldn't open Task Manager, or do anything. I would try to open IE, wouldn't work. Then even explorer.exe would crash sometimes, without it being a Firefox issue. I've also had a lot of unexpected shutdowns lately.I'm very careful with what I download/open, and I'm still using the school's Trend Micro, so I don't expect a virus. I also made a restore disc and ran that, but it didn't find any problems. I also performed the check disk utility, and it found some bad files, some it replaced and others it said it couldn't, so I don't know if that played a part in fixing the issue. I thought it might just be easier all around if I took the time to do a clean install.

The 4730Z appears to use a dual-core Intel T3200, which is 64-bit

Thanks, man. I've spent hours searching for this, and I guess I just didn't put in the right terms. I assume I should download the Home Premium version. We'll see how this goes.

I agree, because the T3200 lacks VT, so no official XP Mode for you...although an unofficial XP Mode is fine too: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11060/create-an-xp-mode-for-windows7-home-versions-and-vista/

What department are you in? If you are still attending school, you may be entitled to a free copy of Windows 7 from the Wolftech MSDNAA center. http://www.wolftech.ncsu.edu/support/support/MSDNAA
