I know there are several other book-threads, but these threads do not focus on novels per se...also, they are not really filtered for awesomeness. Please recommend none but awesome (or at least excellent) novels here. I will start by recommending The Way of All Flesh by Samuel Butler, which I have been reading lately and which is indeed awesome.

Also, I am about to go to the library, so it would be helpful if I could get a couple of recommendations in the next few minutes.

^^^
memoirs are often interesting, and I like the sound of the title and author

^^
I read Dune like 12 years ago, but good call...it was good, and it's about time I read it again.

v I haven't read that

May i suggest that with each recommend novel, you give kinda a gist of what its about (genre, setting, etc)?

So one perusing this thread can quickly evaluate if they might want to check it out.

Falling Angel by William Hjortsberg.

This is a fast-paced detective story, marvelously written, and the ending is truly 10/10.

Of Human Bondage by Sommerset Maugham

The Razor's Edge by Sommerset Maugham

Lolita by Nabakov

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett

Dune through God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert... it gets a bit silly after that, and I personally think God Emperor is the peak of the series.

^ The Trilogy his son wrote is pretty awesome so far. I'm in the middle of the second book right now. Going to read the other books his son wrote after I finish the trilogy.

The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is great and the sequel is coming out this coming spring. A speculative fiction/fantasy book that is a breath of fresh air from the staleness the genre has turned into since the 60s.

If for some reason you didn't read The Count of Monte Cristo in school, I definitely recommend checking it out. Or if you did read it and read the abridged version, the unabridged version is definitely worth it.

The Song Of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin is definitely worth it. Don't be scared off by the fact it gets grouped into "fantasy" as it is very, very good writing and some solid world building.

All the Pretty Horses Cormac McCarthy

I was thinking about recommending this. I'm currently in the middle of Wizard and Glass (book 4). It might take a while to read though, it's over 4000 pages total.

Wizard and Glass was far and away my favorite of the series and stands as my favorite single book by King. Just amazing. The whole series is certainly a marathon read though.

*For aspiring Dark Tower readers--the first volume (The Gunslinger) is the weakest. Not bad by any means though--and do remember that King was 18 or 19 when he wrote it. The expanded version released a few years ago is better, but don't judge the entire series based on the first volume.

I read this...good recommendation, it was indeed awesome.

Vanity Fair by Thackeray. It's a very long book, but at times downright hilarious and of the highest literary merit.
