Mine finally died today. I don't feel like trying to fix it.
Recommend a new vacuum cleaner for me TWW.

I don't get people who use vacuum cleaner. To me, that sounds like a device that cleans vacuums.

My parents bought a Kirby from one of those door-to-door salesmen when I was a kid. Thing weighed like 200 pounds.

my parents also bought one of those deals.

way too expensive, and isn't any better than your average cyclonic vacuum. granted those weren't around back then, but still.

I still have a rainbow vacuum my mom bought like 15 years ago. Thing still works like a champ. But I use my roomba for day to day vacuuming.

Kirby's are commercial quality.
They can be repaired, unlike most modern plastic crap.
They have incredible resale value.
Mine has automatic drive, so it doesn't feel heavy.
Overpriced? maybe... but you can't pay too much for a good pair of shoes.

(No, I am not a Kirby salesman.)

^^

you're doing it wrong.

It's supposed to clean your carpets, not be worn as shoes.

we bought the Dyson Ball Animal last year and still love it. The double filters are clutch if you have pets. I moved the vacuum in our office last week and couldnt believe how limited it's movement is compared to the Ball

haha I was just going to say this.

Anyway, I bought a cheap Bissell upright one at Target a few years back and I have no problems with it. I do use good return air filters for my HVAC system which helps the air as well though. I can have pretty bad allergies in general associated with dust and I never seem to have any problems with dust in our house. /shrug

i've got the central vac deal in my house, but i hate carrying the hose around. so i just use the cyclonic vacuum i bought 6 years ago. its a .bissell.. was about 250 then. pretty good vac, does well with birdseed and other larger objects many vacuums fail at.

last year rainbows were ranked #21 of 23 vacuums tested by consumer reports. they no longer show up on their ratings table this year. the report said that while they filtered air well, they didn't actually pick up stuff off the floor well at all, especially dog hair.

the top rated canister vacuum is the Kenmore Intuition 28014. the Kenmore Progressive 27514, ranked 3rd, is chosen as a best buy.

best upright is the Hoover Platinum Bagged UH30010COM. the first dyson on the list is the animal, and ranked 15th. the best buy pick is the Kenmore Intuition 31100, ranked 5th.

i have a kenmore progressive canister vacuum. that thing is the best vacuum i've ever had in terms of picking up pet hair & dirt. i don't like uprights. all of the kenmore canisters can use their hepa bag filtration. i remember reading that canisters w/ bags still leak less dust into the air than bagless uprights because the seals are better. i don't remember if that was on consumer reports too, or somewhere else.

I definitely prefer canister vacuums over uprights

the vacuum we have now is an upright (first one I've every owned) and I hate it so much that I'm asking for a canister vacuum for Christmas.

My parents have a whole-house vac. They thought is was gonna be easier, that long hose is heavy and it fucks up your walls corners.

I was going to recommend a Kenmore. I wanted a Dyson, but they are too expensive.

The Kenmore was the next best vacuum i saw between Sears, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy, that wasn't too expensive.

It has a very good design for the attachments, is easy to take apart if it clogs, and has the dirt sensor thing that seems to work reasonably well for me.

i use a shark navigator...not as nice as my mom's dyson, but at 1/3 the cost, it's an amazing value
