So I got to thinking about this last night when I had a ridiculous Bistro Steak, Yukon Gold Mash Potatoes, and mushrooms with an amazing agrodolce sauce at FIG in Charleston. What normally would have been just a really good steak, turned into "one of the best things I ever ate" because of the agrodolce sauce. I finished everything on my plate, had a little bit of sauce left spread over the plate, so I grabbed the piece of bread that my gf didn't eat and sopped up the rest. I asked the server about the sauce and she said it had recently been featured on "The Best Thing I ever Ate" tv show on the Food Network. So I searched for it and found it this morning:
http://charleston.thedigitel.com/food/charlestons-fig-restaurant-showing-best-thing-i-ev-22980-0901
Mike Lata is a fucking genius. Out of my top 5 best things I've ever eaten, 3 of them were at FIG. The bistro steak I had last night made it into the top 5, but several years ago I had some ridiculous sweetbreads and short ribs. Those are probabably #1 and #2 on this list. Sweetbreads pretty much dissolved in my mouth. The other two meals that round out my top 5 was a Pittsburgh style steak at Oak Steakhouse and a Duck Confit tagliatelle at Al di La...both also in Charleston. Sentimental favorite would be Grandma's fried chicken
Also had a tomato tarte tatin for an appetizer that is probably top 10 of all time. Never could imagine getting so much flavor out of a tomato.
What are some of the best things you ever ate??

White cheddar Cheez-Its suck dog balls. Regular cheezits is where it's at.
I make an orgasmic chicken piccata. And my hollandaise sauce is to die for. Notice a theme here? BUTTER!!! 10/14/2010 12:09:01 PM |

White Cheddar Cheeze-its sound disgusting.
And butter makes anything better.
I also just had a Cajun Filet biscuit from Bojangles...it hit the friggin spot. I was starving. 10/14/2010 12:10:48 PM |

Tried to find pictures of some of my top meals...didn't have huge success, but did find some other things I really liked:
Pork Trotters (pigs feet of course) with Egg Appetizer at FIG:
This is the steak I had last night...minus the yukon gold mash pots:
Couldn't find the short ribs, but I did find a short rib ravioli I've had there:
Found the duck confit tagliatelle:

The first thing that comes to mind is the Southern Benedict I had at Mayfel's in Asheville. It had fried green tomato, amazing soy sausage and was my first experience with hollandaise. It was nothing particularly fancy, but surprised me with how tasty it was. 10/14/2010 12:35:53 PM |

New Mexican Spice Rubbed Pork Tenderloin with bourbon-ancho chile sauce at Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill in the Bahamas. I wish I wouldnt have been so tipsy when I ate it, but I remember how I started laughing at how good it was (literally laughing out loud)
I dont know why I ordered the pork tenderloin instead of a steak from a Bobby Flay restaurant, I think our waiter recommended it, but I'm glad I took his advice.
there was also a sweet potato tamale with pecan butter sauce on the side that was delicious as well 10/14/2010 1:57:45 PM |

But if you eat it that much it would lose some of its specialness. I read some book (I think Satisfaction) where the author talked about "the sushi problem." It was his favorite food and he wished he could afford to eat it all the time, but then he found that when he started eating it more often, it lost some of its appeal to him. 10/14/2010 2:57:19 PM |

Kobe Beef Steak
@
http://www.lenotre.fr
Best main meal ever... expensive though, at $75.
Lamb's Knuckle, also @ Lenotre, a close 2nd. There is a branch in the US, in Las Vegas.
Tied with 2nd is a seafood platter I had at a restaurant in Mauritius... the most amazing and freshest prawns, crab (SWEET!!!), lobster, mussels, and fish.
P.S. They (Lenotre) also have the most amazing desserts ever.

That's a tough call. I've had a lot of amazingly delicious food so to nail down one thing or another as the best is pretty difficult.
I got nothing...
Okay, i guess I could throw something out there:
The steak at Peter Luger's in Brooklyn was amazing. Worth every cent (though the time I went there I didn't have to pay, lol)

Oh...I wouldn't eat that same thing every time. I would definitely switch it up. And their menu is seasonal, so it's constantly changing. I've never had a less than stellar meal there...so I wouldn't be worried about that too much.10/14/2010 3:07:18 PM |

yeah, its not a great pic, the textures don't look right. but its halibut with an herb crust. i also had some stinging nettle-hazelnut gnocchi with that meal that were just perfect. I found part of the cookbook online but the dish just doesn't work with frozen halibut
I've eaten a lot of drool-worthy stuff at the capital city club too.
