The waiter who served them said she would be happy to make a statement saying they had been perfectly appropriate. The manager and four other staff people came outside to voice their support for the couple, and the manager decided on his own account to go speak to the property manager about the incident and file a complaint. The manager says they will be pursuing the matter further. “This is a clear example of legalized bullying and harassment, and as a community we have to stand up to discrimination whenever it arises” said Alba Onofrio, a member leader with the social justice group Southerners on New Ground (SONG). “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people have the right to lead full lives, and not have to be afraid to be ourselves outside our own homes. If Cameron Village does not believe in that right for all people, they should be held accountable." Breedlove also works with SONG as its co-director. The incident comes on the heels of Monday's National Coming Out Day. Human rights groups say it's especially important now to take action. “Discrimination is not acceptable — on public or private property,” said Ian Palmquist, Executive Director of Equality NC. “It's time for North Carolina to pass a law protecting against discrimination in public accommodations like Cameron Village, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Tough topic here.. while I support the rights of individuals I also support the rights of private property. You are entitled to do what you please on public property I suppose but on private property you can be asked to leave for any number of behaviors. While you and many other people may be fine with it the truth is there are many other people who dont want to take their families and children out for dinner or something and have to explain that. Definitely a fine line on this one where I can see both sides having a valid argument.

In the end though I think if security asks you to leave so long as they do it respectably then you should do so. You can later call and file a complaint, boycott the establishment, whatever but the fact is if it is private property and they ask you to leave then that is their right. It's not like they are asking them to leave because they are black or gay if that was the case they are in the wrong. But you can be gay and not openly show it in front of others who may or may not care. Ugh why did I even type this up I feel certain I will get all types of response to this shitty situation either way really.

The question though is if displaying public affection is a right though. If it was framed as a "no displays of public affection BY ANYONE" then they would be within their rights. However as it was clearly explained that they were asked to leave because they were same-sex--end of story. Discrimination.

Mall security guards don't tend to be the sharpest tools in the shed or the most enlightened of people though so I'm not surprised. At the very least York properties/CV management needs to offer a sincere (if that's possible) apology and make some motion toward disciplining the two security personnel involved.

there are so many other things, that are actually BAD, you have to explain to kids at dinner. you can't completely shelter your kids and why would you want to shelter them from this? the other night when i was eating dinner at a place they had old school hip hop on and every other word was "fuck" "shit" or "nigger" and there was a family sitting right next to us. the dad was looking around like "uhhhhh." finally the music was turned off but i think that is something that warrants an outcry. what if it were an interracial couple? or a really old man with a young wife? would you feel comfortable explaining that to your kids? i mean what exactly is there to explain, anyway? wouldn't you rather have a homosexual couple doing a normal thing (eating dinner together) as an example to show your kids rather than shit they are going to be exposed to anyway via their classmates, tv, and other media?
