Looks too much like the Insight to me. At least it opens up the rear wheel wells. I still don't like the back. 10/16/2010 3:08:41 PM |

It's supposed to be a sporty hybrid. But it's not sporty and for a hybrid its fuel economy isn't much to talk about. It's a vehicle built for nobody.
It's no surprise that I haven't seen one on the road yet, despite it being available for sale for months now.

^ Agreed.
I think theyre really 'neat', and Id like it if a friend bought one so I could check it out. But. Why the hell would you buy one? If youre looking for something with good mileage in the low 20s, get a diesel golf or cooper. More seats, vw has a better interior, way more torque.
Its a 9-10 second 0-60 I believe, so youre not going to buy it for its performance. I suspect the only people who are going to buy it are those who want the 'true' hybrid image (read: uppity and obnoxious, read: not a fusion/civic hybrid) with a little panache. 10/16/2010 6:12:21 PM |

It's a good looking car, but it looks like the "performance" is awful.
That's too bad.

By low 20's, you must have meant OTD pricing for a loaded CR-Z

saw one of these the other day on the road, i thought it was a nice nod to the old cr-x. it looks a bit sportier in person than in that picture. i doubt they will sell well, but looks like it would make for a good urban econo box. sporty handling and 0-60 times don't mean jackshit in stop and go traffic (atl rush hour ftl). 10/16/2010 8:24:10 PM |

"The base CR-Z starts at $19,200 and can reach about $24,000 for the EX model with navigation and a CVT."
I dont think low 20s was a stretch was it? 10/16/2010 8:53:26 PM |

^ I had interpretted your statment that Low 20's was referring to the mpg Your pricing statement is accurate, imo.

^^ ha, no worries, now that I read the thread again it makes sense.
Back to the car. The interior looks rather cool from the shots Ive seen but I just couldnt justify buying a car with 2 seats that goes 0-60 in ~9 seconds. 10/16/2010 11:39:23 PM |

It's not a good looking car. IMO you can't call something good looking if it looks horrible in the side profile. Also hard to think something with and disproportionately large nose looks attractive.

Wow, that side profile really does make the huge beak evident. Almost looks like the front wheels should be farther forward than they are. Some good elements of the styling but it doesn't work as a whole. 10/18/2010 10:17:23 AM |

Guise, how do you plan on arguing with Hondurrr's ENGINEERS???
Connection to CR-X:
Quote : | " The Japanese automaker claims the CR-Z will bring back the kind of driving joy that hasn't been felt since the CRX last left dealer lots in 1991, saying that owners will embrace this new mild hybrid with both their hearts and minds." |
Rationale/purpose of car:
Quote : | ""The CR-Z is a personal sport hybrid coupe for people with a spirit of adventure and an elevated sense of responsibility toward the environment," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "It's the first hybrid designed to maximize style and fun, in addition to efficiency and economy."" |
Quote : | "The 3m 08s video features the car's chief chassis engineer, Terukazu Torikai, who says the CR-Z was created with the basic concept of "fun to drive."
"Since the target of this car was to realise enhanced handling we put huge emphasis on the settings of the EPS [Electric Power Steering], and set body stiffness at a similar level to that of the Civic Type R, using the base frame of the Insight in order to gain predictable control," Torikai said.
"I believe that the car provides exhilarating driving pleasure," he said." |
Inspiration and benchmarks:
Quote : | "Video: Honda engineer talks CR-Z, says Lotus Elise was an influence
What was Honda's mindset when it created the CR-Z? If you can believe the marketing frippery in the video after the jump, it's all about "fun-to-drive." According to Terukazu Torikai, the chief engineer for chassis dynamics on the CR-Z, Honda benchmarked several vehicles during the development of its new hatch, and not only was Mini mentioned a few times, Honda drove everything from the Volkswagen Scirocco to the Lotus Elise. Torikai goes on to say that "the performance of the Elise kept on inspiring us throughout the whole development process." That bodes well from both a handling and steering perspective, but we remain lukewarm on the prospects until we finally get a stint behind the wheel.

...on the showroom floor at Cary AutoPark Honda. So I still have yet to see one that someone has actually purchased. Anyway, I will agree that it is better looking in person. That's not to say it's a great looking car.
