"Elementary student brings pot to school to turn in his parents

MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) - Two parents are facing drug charges after their child took their drugs to school and told a school officer his parents were breaking the law.

WBTV is not releasing the names of the parents or the name of the school to protect the child's identity.

The 11-year-old student is in 5th grade at a an elementary school in Matthews. Police say he brought his parents' marijuana cigarettes to school when he reported them.

Matthews Police say he reported his parents after a lesson about marijuana was delivered by a police officer who is part of the D.A.R.E. program, which teaches kids about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

"Even if it's happening in their own home with their own parents, they understand that's a dangerous situation because of what we're teaching them," said Matthews Officer Stason Tyrrell. That's what they're told to do, to make us aware."

Tyrrell says the town's D.A.R.E. officer spends time at each of the three elementary schools in Matthews teaching kids to make the right choice when it comes to drugs.

Police arrested the child's 40-year-old father and 38-year-old mother on Thursday.

Both were charged with two misdemeanor counts each of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were not jailed and were released on a written promise to appear in court.

"I don't give drugs to my kids," the father told us when we went to his house.

When we asked him how his kid got ahold of his drugs, he replied, "That's no one's business."

Police say both the 11-year old and a sibling have been removed from the parents' house by social services. Police say they are staying with relatives.

I would like for him to explain how it is a dangerous situation, especially when compared to alcohol consumption.

^ I have never heard of weed being associated with violent crimes. As a side note to that, alcohol is also associated with violent crimes too.

I know it's drugs and all, but you can lose your kids for a misdemeanor? If it's that serious of a crime, then it should be more than a misdemeanor... I dunno.. something doesn't make sense here..

Also, the kid has obviously been halfway well-raised by the parents if he's this law-abiding. Unless he has really shitty parents and he sees this as a way to get rid of them.

Even my cop buddy says they need to legalize pot already. I think alcoholic parents are a lot worse for children than pot smokers.

Wow... I mean I think drugs are bad, mmk, but seriously, even I don't think weed is a prevalent drug of where it would cause violent behavior. What we need is to regulate alcohol sales even more, but make weed legal.

Seriously, I would think Meth and meow meow would be a more important issue.

[Edited on October 18, 2010 at 4:24 PM. Reason : and meow meow is legal? wtf]

Weed is a precursor to meow meow, and meow meow is a precursor to being found dead in a stairwell. Weed will lead you to premature stairwell death.

It seems that the main issue (why the children were taken away) wasn't from the fact that the parents smoke pot. It's that the children had access to their stash. So the parents are probably being deemed unfit due to the fact that they were irresponsible with their stash.

its not a good look when your kid finds a way to get his hands on your drugs

McDanger would argue that there is nothing wrong with this and that its cool that parents smoke pot in front of their kids or in the same household.

In Soviet Russia, kids tell on their parents.

oh wait... what the fuck?

.

what gets me is the police think this is okay, for kids to be ratting out their parents? this is "what they're told to do", that fucking up your family is "the right choice"

I see why social services took the kids out of the home. they knew the dad was gonna bust somebody's ass.

i bet the marijuana lesson failed to mention the fact that turning your parents in probably gets you moved to your grandmother's house or put into the child services system

i'm sure it was worth it though!

The kid is just a dumb kid, I can't hate on him. I doubt he anticipated the consequences of his actions.

The cop who took advantage of those actions to arrest the parents and seize the children, now that guy is a colossal shit-head.

I too wonder if breaking up a family like that and putting the kid through social services would fuck the kid up even more than just some pot head parents. I mean choose the better of the two evils... No matter how you look at it, all kids these days are fucked up. Just which one is less fucked up is about the best you can hope for these days.

i know. and i think the system will fuck up a kid WAY more than pot smoking parents; however, the issue here definitely is that the drugs were left where the kid had access to them. i feel like you can be a pot smoking parent and be responsible, and part of that probably includes NOT smoking in front of your kid (until they are 18 or college aged) and NOT putting your pot in a place where your kid has access to it. not that hard of a concept, people NOT. THAT. HARD.

so if the parents just left joints sitting around where a 5th grader could find them then maybe they are fucked up. who knows. but again, its pot. not like meth or something.

also, i thought matthews NC had some pretty affluent areas. i wonder if these are rich pot smoking parents or redneck pot smoking parents.

"Nearly all children nowadays were horrible. What was worst of all was that by means of such organizations as the Spies they were systematically turned into ungovernable little savages, and yet this produced in them no tendency whatever to rebel against the discipline of the Party. On the contrary, they adored the Party and everything connected with it... All their ferocity was turned outwards, against the enemies of the State, against foreigners, traitors, saboteurs, thought-criminals. It was almost normal for people over thirty to be frightened of their own children."

I don't think this is fucked up at all. But then again, I'm pretty anti-drugs. :\ I wish my cousins had done this to my aunt/uncle when they had a crystal meth lab in the living room.. (I know, not exactly the same, but more kids should be made aware it's not ok to do drugs in front of your kids)
