^ this guy, he knows his stuff

.50 cal muzzleloader, CVA Buckhorn

pic is in my gallery.....hard to tell from angle, but it was a high double lung shot, about 2 more inches and it would've just passed right through both backstraps and the deer woulda took off.....

good...haha

the closest thing that i know of is beef, but it is slightly different, and it has next to no fat in the meat at all. If you grind it up and use it for spaghetti or hamburger helper you won't taste the difference between deer and beef.

As long as you are eating it I don't have too much trouble with it. It's the "rawr rawr I am man. Watch me murder things" types that I have a problem with. Grats though.

haha it wasnt that small...unless you have a rather large dog...it had tits so it had had a baby that had just recently finished nursing, so it was big enough for me. plus it was a gamelands deer and its kinda hard to find big ones out there.

and i think most hunters that kill but don't eat often have friends that theey give the meat to, but this deer will be turned into jerky/cubed steak/hamburger

BHS-this was probably the fourth deer I shot at and finally got a kill after going hunting about 20 times. but in my defense this was the first time I used a gun with a scope, and that I was actually confident with.

I do have a large dog, but he is nowhere near the size of a deer I would consider taking.

That being said, I guess you gotta get the first one under your belt. Congrats!

Deer is delicious- most of the time I'm vegetarian but I will sometimes eat stuff that's hunted, especially ethically.

Try a game roast with onions, carrots, etc. with it- awesome.

I marinade my venison in Dale's. Not for too long..only about 15-20 minutes, then grill for exactly 5 minutes on medium-high heat. 2.5 minutes each side.

SO.GOOD.

What the hell? You should know when you squeeze the trigger that in a half-second, there will be a dead deer. I've never had a deer so much as take a step after I took a shot. If you're fucking missing them, you could just as easily be wounding/maiming them.

Learn to shoot/get a better weapon/take shorter shots/do whatever you need to do, but only connecting with a fatal shot 25% of the time is abysmal and irresponsible.

I amend my previous statement. I missed a running deer one time with a shotgun slug when I was a teenager. It was the first shot I ever took at a deer, and it was a stupid one that I never should have taken.

Ever since then, though, I've taken smarter shots, and they've all gone down immediately. Anyone can screw up and pull one, and if you do it, it's not like you're a bad person. If you're making shitty shots 75% of the time, though, you are WAY wrong and need to remedy the situation before you break some deer's leg, gun shoot it, or break its jaw so it runs off and dies of starvation or infection (I mention that one because I know someone who's done it).

did you not read my post? as i previously stated, i finally got a gun ( my muzzleloader) that had a scope on it and that I had shot enough at paper targets to feel comfortable using.) The only deer that I have shot at with it has dropped dead after a double lung shot, with a large exit wound. My friend also used this gun this year and killed a deer in the exact same way. As you should know, unfamiliarity with the gun, and a lack of confidence because of inexperience can cause a tendency to miss your targets. the new gun = 2 shots and 2 quick ethical kills. I got a better weapon and practiced with it before the season started, so your advice is no longer, and never was needed. Get over yourself Mr. "you miss? you should never miss, end of story. I could give my two year old a gun and he could kill a deer at 200 yards!" Get out of my thread.

I used to kill soda cans with my rifle.

But then I defied the safety rules and was banned from shootin'.

Managed to accomplish that when I was like 8 so, yeah, I'm like a billion years out of practice. But in a Red Dawn situation, I'm totally down...

Well, it sounds like you have your problem solved. That's good.

Fuck you and your thread, though, I'll post whatever I want, and I maintain that you should pretty much not be missing shots when hunting. If you're going to miss, do it shooting at paper, while you're learning what you and your weapon are and are not capable of.

Quote :
"

No, unfamiliarity, lack of confidence, and inexperience cause you to not be a good shooter. Failing to account for that and have the restraint to not take those shots is what causes you to miss game animals.

Quote :

Again, that's good...well done, but...

Quote :
" so your advice is no longer, and never was needed. Get over yourself Mr. "you miss? you should never miss, end of story. I could give my two year old a gun and he could kill a deer at 200 yards!" Get out of my thread."

...you still don't get it, so it sounds like maybe my advice still is needed.

You're 18 years old and don't know shit about shit, least of all responsibly taking game animals. My whole point is not that I'm the greatest rifleman to ever walk the Earth, but that not missing or wounding/maiming animals is the standard. That's what you're supposed to do.

You may have the ability now to hit the basketball-sized vital area of a whitetail deer at 100m, but you're going to fuck up again unless you get it through your head that it should be all but a foregone conclusion every time you squeeze the trigger.

No sir, you still don't get it....this was the FIRST shot that I have taken with the new gun at a Game animal; 1 shot 1 kill. my point that you are so happily missing is that i have already figured out what was wrong and have already fixed it. I have hit bulls-eyes all day long, and feel very much at home using the weapon. I know that not wounding/maiming/missing animals is the goal, and that's why i practiced with the weapon.

I am referring to:
Quote :
"Get over yourself Mr. "you miss? you should never miss, end of story. I could give my two year old a gun and he could kill a deer at 200 yards!" Get out of my thread"

as evidence of your attitude that missing is acceptable.
