I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I've got a ~3GB folder I need to get from my PC to my laptop (no ROM drive), and I've got them both hardwired to my router...can't get them to talk to each other. Laptop - Windows 7 Home Premium, PC - Vista Ultimate
this is time-sensitive folks, any and all help much appreciated 10/25/2010 12:44:13 PM |

Sharing settings set up on one/both? 10/25/2010 12:46:10 PM |

^^ yes, both see network and have internet access
don't know about workgroup/domain (turned off wireless, so it's a physical connection), I can't seem to figure out sharing on win7...keeps talking about some homegroup that only works with other win7 computers 10/25/2010 1:01:03 PM |

Run to Best Buy, buy a 4 GB flash drive, copy data to flash drive, and then over to other computer.
Not a free way, but I don't know much else if you can't get them to talk to each other via a router. I don't know of any websites that will let you upload such a big file/folder. Not to mention it may take your internet a significant amount of time to upload such a folder.
Edit: Have you checked to make sure that you have enabled sharing on both network connections on both computers?
Also, make sure that the file you are trying to transfer is under the "Shared" directories. Most computers have strict firewall access that won't allow you to just go search through every folder you have.

nvm, figured it out
^yeah i didnt figure there was any sense in spending money on it when it should be easily doable
though i could use a 4gb card for my dslr anyway...oh well, moot point now

Im assuming you mapped a drive. Win 7 made it easy to share files but its only with other win7 computers. 10/25/2010 1:16:54 PM |

nope...just opened up guest permissions on the vista end and shared the particular folder
dont know why i spent so much time farting around with win7 when i just did it from the more familiar end 10/25/2010 1:35:59 PM |

^that was going to be my suggestion. make sure you actually share the folder! 10/25/2010 3:02:07 PM |

yeah it had been a while since i've done any of this stuff, forgot the obvious...and as idiot-proof as win7 is, it was easier just to do it the old fashioned way 10/25/2010 4:43:52 PM |
