David L was hit by an EED (electronic explosive device) while on patrol in Afghanistan. He suffered severe injuries, including shrapnel in his left leg, the loss of his right leg, 2 collasped lungs, and other bumps, cuts, and bruises. He had on full protective gear, which we have to thank for his life.

I think one is detonated via electronic means - timer, cell phone, gps position, etc.

The other is strapped to some willing champ and set off by hand. Or contact - like a mine.

they're all still IEDs

RCIED=Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device
VBIED=Vehicle-borne...
CWIED=Command wire...
VOIED=Victim Operated... (pressure plate, trip wire, IR trigger, etc)
SVIED=Suicide vest...



other acronyms you'll see are:

IRAM (improvised rocket assisted mortar)
EFP (explosively formed penetrator...this is a type of shaped charge that fires a metal slug and can defeat heavy armor. shitty ones can be homemade, but generally they're provided by state sponsors)
