Model: STR-K840P, was bought in 2003, 5.1, 600w system...

Protect Error... Tried all the simple solutions... Who can fix this?

I had an old sony receiver do the same thing. IIRC it needed a new power source and was a cheap fix.

repairing a 7 year old receiver is not worth it at all... especially a non-ES Sony.

I would suggest buying a better receiver.

most likely one (or both) of the IC amps or the output transistors. make sure one of your speakers (or the speaker wire) isn't shorting out first, though. might also want to look at the joints on the IC amps - they run hot as crap and like to desolder themselves occasionally.

honestly, it's probably more trouble to fix it than it's worth. those STK chips will run you like $8 each, and they're just going to fail again eventually unless you stick a heatsink or something on there.

save your money and get something a little nicer... maybe an onkyo tx-8555 or even the tx-8255.

I haven't looked in a newer reciever like this in awhile, but those "STK" chips you are referring to typically ARE the "output transistors".
