Interesting... I normally paste special images as EMFs to keep the file size down... normally I just open the image in MS Office 2010, copy, then go to word, paste special, as ->enhanced metafile. But now there is only one option in the paste special menu (file)... which will paste the object. Then if I copy the object from the document, the paste special options are all there.... I'm fairly certain this is NOT how I have been doing this...

we have a big problem w/ doc file sizes. i've never heard of the emf thing. i wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

if you're using Office 2007/2010, on the Home ribbon, paste special is all the way on the left. click the down arrow, paste special, then picture (enhanced metafile).

EMF is a terrible paste option. Especially for images. It's an archaic graphics format that only still exists (along with WMF) for legacy compatibility issues and because it's used so heavily under the covers of the GDI rendering engine in Windows.

If you find yourself concerned about filesize due to images (and other embedded content), use the image size and quality settings. (File->Options)

First, if you are copying images from one office document to another, you should just use the default copy/paste option.

Second, if you are copying images from another application, you should use Paste Special... and choose the "Device Independent Bitmap" option.

Image Size and Quality Settings


Check "discard editing data"
and set the output to 96ppi.

I realize EMF is old; I normally just paste as bitmap because I'm not normally concerned about file size; but the bossman told me to paste images this way because that's what he likes (not that he could really tell anyways...).
