I don't get people who speed up just to make sure someone can't merge when traffic is bad. Like that one car getting ahead of you is going to dramatically affect your arrival time 10/28/2010 6:29:16 PM |

it's the people who know the lane is ending...and still try to scoot around everyone (by getting in the lane that ends) when traffic is bad. they piss me off
that's the only time i'll tailgate a car.

^^^^ funny enough, the only way to defeat this is to have both lanes filled in with cars so there isn't an empty lane for people to pass on

the guy is less of an asshole if he's traveling at the same speed as people in the full lane. the second he starts speeding, he's an asshole, because then he's trying to "beat" traffic 10/28/2010 9:34:52 PM |

I still win, I could care less about everyone else.
If everyone else used common sense, I wouldn't be able to travel ahead of everyone because nobody would let me in.
But you can always count on one nice guy to let you in. 10/28/2010 9:58:32 PM |

People who merge at the last second require all the traffic to stop to let them in. This stops all traffic while if everyone was in the single lane they would continue moving at a slow steady rate. Late mergers who force people to stop to let them in should be blown off the road with a roof mounted rocket launcher. 10/28/2010 10:15:53 PM |

I like how there is a concrete barrier at the N. Harrison entrance to I-40 right now. I know it's only temporary, but that thing fucking rules. The other day there was like a 5 car gap behind my truck and some dumb bitch in a Lexus IS250 still blew past me and then turned her signal on to tell me it was my time to brake and let her pussy sedan be placed in front of me. I just kept it tight on the car in front of me until she almost wrecked her shit into the barrier and pulled in behind me.
That anecdote pretty much sums up my feelings on merge etiquette. 10/28/2010 10:31:16 PM |

We gotta zipper, and we need a PSA about the importance of using both lanes and zippering.
The reason I don't get in the other lane isn't cause I'm worried people will think I'm a jerk. It's cause I'm worried nobody will let me in (zipper). So I end up in the "proper" lane, pissed about all the "jerks" who are speeding past me (even though I know they're doing the correct thing).
I do often wonder whether or not construction managers are necessarily informed by civil engineers when it comes to closing down a lane and whatnot. 10/28/2010 11:34:21 PM |

I like my two vehicles. I'm on my bike 90% of the time and can zip in and out of traffic easily without causing people to significantly alter course, cuts waaay back on delay times. My other one is a full-ton dually and I pretty much just do what I want.
The trick is I'm not an asshole about it though. I follow the rules, wait my turn, let people in, drive assertively to help balance out the defensive and thickheaded slugs that cause jams in the first place. I only do that kind of stuff when some jackass decides his time is more important than mine and I will remind him that a 3-ton diesel would incur very little damage while displacing his cute little jeep liberty.

As a subset of this situation, an asshole doing this on an on-ramp to the interstate the other day nearly took me out on my motorcycle. I'm in the left lane, less than a car length behind the car in front of me, plenty of room behind me, and he flies up in the right lane as it turns into the shoulder and edges into my lane. Talking on his goddamn cellphone the whole time
The second you drive on the shoulder, and/or the second you edge your way into a lane in front of a vehicle in the target lane where there's no room, with plenty of room behind, you are a raging asshole. Especially when talking on your cellphone. Especially when endangering a bike. 10/29/2010 8:05:22 AM |

Human beings are far too selfish and dumb for the "zipper" traffic pattern to work. Also, its rarely necessary outside of downtown streets. Usually its just some jerk zooming up the ending lane because he/she has a compulsion to get ahead of other cars. 10/29/2010 9:01:31 AM |

Yeah...that was pretty much my point. I gladly let people in for the first 2/3 of the entrance ramp or so, but there's always some jackass who willingly passes several spots that he could have "zippered in" only to get to the end of the line and try to force his way in. That guy is a jackass.10/29/2010 12:01:35 PM |

^ I don't know how to explain it, but I always feel like I can tell when someone has an "Oops" versus a "I"m going to be a jackass" moment. For one thing, "oops" usually involves a signal coming on, "jackass" usually doesn't 10/29/2010 1:50:28 PM |
