At a lot of places, you'll fill out a little form when you get to the place indicating what type of massage you would like (relaxing, therapeutic, deep-tissue, yada yada), and one of the questions will be whether you prefer a male or female. I don't indicate a preference, but I am still usually asked anyway if it's alright to have a male masseur; I have always been given a male because I get deep tissue massages, and it's a lot easier for the masseur if they're bigger and heavier with more weight to put into it.

So there is that aspect of it. If you want to get much therapeutic benefit, you're probably better off with a guy if you're comfortable with it (on average). I'm not suggesting women are incapable of giving a good deep tissue massage; I'm just relating the experiences I've had, including once where the manager specifically asked me because he said none of the females there at that time would be able to. But if your goal is to get relaxation out of it, it doesn't matter so much.

On the masseur's side, a male masseur has to deal with this all the time and should assuredly be very professional. He won't be uncomfortable unless you are visibly so, and even if you are, he should be able to handle it appropriately.
