NCSU's main campus is entirely in this district.

In fairness it reaches to Pittsboro, Lilington, Smithfield, and Franklinton too, its not just Raleigh. But I'm still surprised that central NC went for this fear mongering.

^Yeah, it took me a minute, but I made it there.

Most students can't vote in this district, and most won't go home just to vote.

It makes the college demographic pretty worthless in elections.

More rants.

In NC's 5th. Incumbent GOP Foxx vs Challenger Billy Kennedy:
Quote :
"A deather paneler, compares opposition political position to terrorism, calls a son’s murder a hoax in front of his mom for political points, voted against relief for victims of Katrina, she took credit for civil rights legislation, she spends time doing stuff like cosponsoring a resolution stating religion is necessary for freedom, she was in on the attempted constitutional amendment to ban flag burning, she voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, she voted against kids health insurance, she cosponsored a bill to repeal DC’s marriage equality & tried a US constitutional amendment to ban it, she has horrible environmental rankings, she’s anti-choice, she’s voted against stem cell research, she voted against repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and has stated that “I'm misunderstood in the same way Jesse Helms was""

Incumbent GOP Foxx.

Up in VA. GOP Incumbent Rob vs Dem Challenger Krystal:
Quote :
"Krystal runs her own small business, she's a CPA, she's a member of the NRA, and her website focuses on stuff like veterans, education, 2nd amendment rights, and middle class tax cuts, and she's not the "Washington insider." You'd think that message would play to conservative district, but instead she's going to be crushed by the guy who refused to debate her, and who said he stands for this: "As a member of the Values Action Team, I will continue to support pro-life, pro-family legislation. I will work in defense of parental rights, religious liberty, and the definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Furthermore, I support efforts to curb internet pornography and obscenity.""

NC State Senate:
Quote :
"we're finally going to join the rest of the south with a constitutional amendment to ban marriage for gay couples. last time it took the GOP State Senate 2 days into the session to introduce this measure, but the dems killed it. the election reform things that i liked that were being piloted will die. and i expect the unanimously opposed step towards comprehensive sex ed (w/ parents permission) passed last year will be repealed."

And of course Ellmers used Muslims are scary to win.

This was a big night for those who want social conservative in government across the country, and a redistricting year so these results will get locked in, in some ways for the next decade.

More rant. This guy is now going to be speaker of the House:

He cosponsored H.J. Res 47 to ban flag burning, voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, he cosponsored efforts on allowing roving warrant-less wiretapping of Americans, voted against the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act, voted against shareholder approval of corporate political ads, wants less oil drilling regulation, voted against repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, is anti-choice, and is pro-teaching intelligent design.

Here is a gem on his scare tactics:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/30/gop.ad/index.html
"House Minority Leader Boehner releases Web ad attacking Obama on security"

An image of the Pentagon on fire during the 9/11 attacks is used in a new GOP Web video attacking the president.

Before anyone asks, I did check for older threads first, even the latest one with his name was too old to bump:
"Boehner knew Foley was a Pedophile months ago"
http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=436097&page=1

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/02/AR2006020202571_pf.html
Quote :
"But Boehner has had his share of taint. He handed out checks from tobacco lobbyists on the House floor in 1995 while lawmakers were weighing tobacco subsidies. In 2004, he allowed Sallie Mae to throw him a fundraiser while the student lending outfit was lobbying his committee. And he is a frequent flier on trips paid for by special interests."

This guy has been in Washington for 20 years. He just cried in his acceptance speech twice about Washington finally trying something new (him). He cried once when he said American Dream and again when he said Small Business.

Well, for one, we need to actually teach logic.
Both the dems and repubs actively oppose that, because they depend on fooling people.

Teach children logic.
Teach them that a:b::c:d doesn't compare a and/or b to c and/or d.
Teach them to think, and the future will be good.

So we were chillin and talking with a few of the candidates tonight, then all of a sudden all the news cameras run to the TV and we're like "WTF IS SHE MAKING AN ACCEPTANCE SPEECH?!?!?!"

I mean she pulled the trigger on that a little early. Whether she wins or not, she was only up by 1000 votes and precincts were still reporting.

Everyone in the room was like que?

^^^Burr was always a big spender when the GOP was in control. Given that neither of the big parties represents true fiscal responsibility, its hard to get excited about that as an issue. Although I've been a vocal supporter of increasing ballot access to more parties.

Anyways I based my votes, activism, donations, and volunteering almost entirely on opposing social conservativism which is its own kind of nanny state.

My anti-Burr criticisms I think for a large part things that a libertarian could agree with. Granted some of it was incompetence focused, and the last one was a bit of a joke. And I'm for groups like the EPA & CDC existing b/c things like oil spills and spread of disease don't respect state boundaries. So I'm not sure how the environmental concern would go over with anti-nanny-staters. But I don't think my most of main message from the election was so offensive to libertarians.

Quote :
"Economy - When he was first learning of the severity of the recession he told his wife to go to the ATM day after day taking out all the money it would allow b/c he was convinced that in a few days "if you put a plastic card in an ATM machine the last thing you were going to get was cash" which earned him the nickname Bank Run Burr. And, after his meeting with representatives from Goldman Sachs, who then gave the max allowed contribution to his campaign, he took a strong stand against Wall Street Reform. In fact Burr has gotten more money from out of state that in state for many years now, this year is no different. We know who he represents.

Environment - He tends to rate horribly here. According to Wikipedia: "Burr has generally received low ratings from environmental-protection organizations. In 2007-2008, for example, he received a rating of 0% from Environment America[17], 12% from the League of Conservation Voters, and 29% from Republicans for Environmental Protection." And he's taken plenty of cash from big oil like Haliburton, BP, and others which is reflected in his voting record.

Gay Rights - He's against repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell and favors an amendment to the US constitution to write in a ban of gay marriage which even his Libertarian opponent has called him out on for wasting government time/money on trying to rewrite the constitution with more of his social conservatism.

Obstructionist - Even with the military. In addition to participating in filibuster threats, he held up Duckworth's nomination to a key position in the office of veteran affairs despite her strong qualifications. He specifically also let generals travel from Korea and Hawaii to Washington DC for a meeting of the Senate Armed Services Committee and then canceled the meeting as a part of a larger party wide effort of obstructionism to not even let meetings happen. And his recent efforts have attempted to block unemployment relief and small business support efforts.

War - Burr says we still need several more years of war. Whereas Elaine has challenged President Obama on amount of conflict we're involved with.

Washington Incumbent - This one might not be a big deal to everyone, but I know for some people they don't like politicians who have been in Washington forever, and Burr has been in Washington for nearly 2 decades. But after nearly 2 decades it’s hard to name any big Burr accomplishments unless you want to count his attempt to make flag burning illegal?

Women's issues - He voted against Franken's anti-rape amendment which passed with many Dem & GOP votes. He also voted for domestic violence to continue as a pre-existing condition. He’s anti-choice and he voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

Carolina - Burr introduced this: 3. S.RES.110 : A resolution congratulating the University of North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team for winning the 2008-2009 NCAA men's basketball championship. Sponsor: Sen Burr, Richard [NC] (introduced 4/22/2009) "

I guess maybe my support of anti-worst practices of puppy mills, and support of strengthening anti-animal abuse laws is a bit nanny-stateish too, but they can't speak out for themselves. But anti-social conservatism & animal welfare are the only 2 places I've supported strongly enough to donate towards lately.

"Voters in Iowa chose to remove three high court justices who helped make Iowa the first Midwestern state to permit same-sex marriage.

The vote marks the first time a member of the Iowa Supreme Court has been rejected by the voters under the current system that began in 1962.

Under the voting system in Iowa, each of the three justices up for retention -- Chief Justice Marsha Ternus, David Baker and Michael Streit -- needed simply to get more "yes" votes than "no" votes in the election to be elected for another eight-year term. They faced no opponents. None of the judges raised money for the campaign.

While all seven justices on the court ruled with Ternus, Baker and Streit, those three were the only ones whose seats were up for retention. None of them received the 50 percent "yes" vote needed to remain on the bench."

Dude, regardless of anyone's politics, why is health care lumped together?

When a drunk driver randomly hits someone and breaks their leg, they need health care for a broken leg.
When someone rides a shopping cart off a roof for fun and breaks their leg, they need health care for a broken leg.

Both situations = broken leg

Lumping health care together makes absolutely no sense.
It suggests we say, "Let's forget how or why things happen, let's only look at the health care need." Both of these people have broken legs. Both have an equal right to health care for that. Both should be subsidized by taxes. This is disgustingly wrong.

Only when you treat every health care need on a case-by-case basis, focusing on how or why the care is needed, and who is actually responsible for it, will the system be fair and just.
Lumping health care together makes absolutely no sense.
(An insurance mandate, and other of the Obama-care policies do just that.)

I wouldn't mind seeing a system similar to how Australia does it. The government healthcare program is paid for out of your paycheck and covers up to 70% of your healthcare costs (or maybe it was 80%, I don't remember at the moment). If you would like additional coverage, you can buy private healthcare coverage.

I wouldn't mind seeing a system similar to how ?????????? does it. The government health care program is paid for out of your paycheck and covers the 10% or so of health care costs that are reasonably no one's fault, and the 20% or so of health care costs that are reasonably someone else's fault, who hasn't paid the bill yet. If you would like additional coverage for the health care costs that result from your own actions like smoking or eating sugar, you can buy private health care coverage.

AT NO POINT SHOULD ANYONE BE FORCED TO PAY EVEN ONE PENNY FOR SOMETHING THAT IS CLEARLY SOMEONE ELSE'S RESPONSIBILITY.

YOU SMOKE TOBACCO AND GOT LUNG CANCER?
YOU PAY 100% OR YOU DIE. SORRY. YOUR CHOICE.

YOU GOT HIT BY A RANDOM LIGHTNING BOLT?
YOU PAY 0%, SOCIETY PICKS UP THE TAB. THAT'S FAIR.

YOU GOT HIT BY A DRUNK DRIVER?
YOU PAY 0%, SOCIETY PICKS UP THE TAB, BUT ONLY UNTIL/IF THE DRUNK DRIVER PAYS IT.

IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS AND ISN'T FAIR.
LUMPING ALL HEALTH CARE TOGETHER INTENTIONALLY BLURS THIS, BECAUSE IT IS AIMED AT SOCIALISM.

(oh noes, I said the 's' word and therefore lose all credibility )
