Let me give you a tip when it comes to when it comes to making "Fuck You" money. When you want to start off with a base price, forget what you paid for it and forget what people are selling it in the stores for. Prices of new things fluctuate, especially when there is still demand for it and it's no longer in production. Heck, many websites have such a mechanism built in so that when the quantity reaches a certain amount, it bumps the price up by a certain percentage.
The best place to look is places like craigslist and ebay. And don't just look for your monitor. Look at competitors within the same specs. Even if you looked at new 19" monitors, you should have found sites like Newegg, Tiger Direct and even Amazon that listed them between 100-150 USD (yes, i widened the gap, because two of the websites I mentioned will probably be 20 or so dollars more than another website for the same product).
Look, I knew you weren't expecting to get 150 bucks for the monitor. But typically when someone puts a price and follows up with OBO, they're looking for something in the ball park of 150 bucks. Unless you just pull numbers out of your butt, which you clearly don't, you typically start out with what you think the maximum someone would pay for what you're paying. It's not necessarily going to be what you'll get, but it's a number you feel that is achievable. And hell, like most sellers, you already know a minimum price that you will accept. Kind of like selling a car.
KB value says the car is worth 10000, but that's a pretty high estimate and you know you would take 9500 for it.
My point is that if you're going to pick a number, pick something that is reasonable. And before you sell the monitor, I will throw you a bone. Similar monitors, and that same monitor, are being sold for about 60 bucks on ebay. If you want to try to get more for the monitor, try listing it's condition. Most LCD monitors use a CCFL backlight. They dim over time. If your monitor is 2 years old and it's noticeably dimmer than when you first got it, that might be something to with hold or put on the table. If it's still pretty damn bright because it sat off most of the time, you can use that to your advantage when selling the monitor.
I know you called me a troll, and I know you don't really understand it's meaning even though I detailed what a troll is. But after reading my first post, asides from thinking that I'm an asshole, did you have a better understanding of what you should expect to get for that monitor and what it's worth? If so, then what I was doing was not trolling. 11/3/2010 3:34:59 AM |

I would buy some land in Appalachia with a mountain on it and build a survival compound in the mountain big enough to sustain a few thousand people of my choosing for a few decades. Just in case of nuclear holocaust, tsunamis, chinese/russians, super volcanoes, or zombies.
I'd rent out a luxury hotel suite for a year in beverly hills, vegas, or nyc and try to bang hot stupid celebrities. Possibly woo them back to my survival compound. 11/3/2010 7:50:33 AM |

I'm going to buy a beach lodge in Costa Rica or Panama (profit-generating), and a house in Nicaragua (cheap as hell but I'll have to build in one of the very few safe areas). A house in Puerto Rica where I'll spend most of my time. Continental US will be primarily for short visits to family and nostalgic vacations. 11/3/2010 9:28:56 AM |

I'd actually like to expand on my response.
I'll open a luxury jungle lodge in Costa Rica or Nicaragua. It will be a health/wellness retreat with an emphasis on yoga, Pilates, surfing and hiking. It will offer healthy, gourmet cuisine and a variety of enriching wellness-related activities and amenities, like macrobiotic cooking classes, spa services and meditation classes.

Phase 2: Buy a house at an NC beach. Open a restaurant/bar. Work to make the best possible version of a couple of different dishes so that it gains some notoriety, one of which must be shrimp and grits. Eat shrimp and grits EVERY DAY. Die happy. 11/3/2010 2:44:49 PM |

In order:
- Pay off my law school loans and my mortgage
- Buy my mom something nice
- Put a good chunk of change in the bank
- Travel the world. Probably hit up Thailand, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, etc. Then some South America. Then finish it off with some European travel. I would do it backpacking/hostel style, as I enjoy this type of traveling.
- Open up a bar either in Charleston or just some tiny beach bar somewhere tropical. Would probably lean towards Charleston because I still want to do the family thing...although I could do that somewhere tropical, it would probably turn into hippy family...which although I don't frown upon, would not be my first choice. 11/3/2010 3:09:21 PM |

Yeah, sort of the same here.
I'd live more extravagantly than I do now, and I certainly wouldn't say it would be "modest", but it wouldn't be baller or anything, either.
I mean, it would be apparent that I had a decent amount of money, but not that I had dozens of millions of dollars sitting around. Like, people might figure that I made a couple hundred thousand per year, but not that I had fortyeleven million dollars sitting around. You wouldn't see me on Cribs or anything.11/3/2010 5:38:18 PM |

^^yeah, even if I had HUGE money...like multibillionaire sort of wealth, and no amount of mansions or megayachts would make any financial difference (I'd have to start buying up shitloads of corporations and islands and stuff to ever go broke), I still wouldn't live that way. Maintaining a relatively normal lifestyle, hanging out with normal people, doing normal things, etc, would be much more valuable, at least to me. Again, it would look like I made a very good living--I wouldn't drive around in a Crown Victoria like Warren Buffett--but it wouldn't be an NBA superstar or Saudi prince sort of lifestyle. I wouldn't tell a damn soul how much money I had, and I would maintain the appearance of living plausibly within the realm of the upper middle class.
