I transferred into NCSU with 4 PEs, and took one here. Now NCSU is telling me that my PEs won't transfer from my previous college, since I took them credit only, and that I have to take a 100-level PE before I can graduate.
I wouldn't normally care about just taking the PE, but I just don't see how spending those hours in "fitness walking" (or any of the equally lame options) is more of a productive way to spend my time than, say, um, pretty much anything else that pertains to my major or getting a job.
It's kind of the principle of the thing, too... I guess I'd be less pissed about it if I could take something fun (sqash, dance, spinning, rock climbing, whatever) instead of friggin "step aerobics".
So... anyone ever gotten the requirement waived? How do I do it? I've already talked to the undergrad adviser for my department, and she said tough luck. 11/9/2010 10:53:18 PM |

that's the normal situation of a PE class. under what situation would you not care about just taking the PE?11/10/2010 1:57:57 AM |

What is the best 101 PE I wonder? They're all basic I guess, but I bet SOMEONE on TWW is polarized on this subject.
I've heard Cycling. 11/10/2010 3:46:15 AM |

Challenging decisions on transfer credits looks like a nightmare. If I'm following the NCSU webpages on the subject correctly, you have to run between admissions, registration and records, and your college's dean in order to question a decision. I guess I would start with the dean's office and see what they are willing to do. It might be less hassle to just take the PE. 11/10/2010 1:49:29 PM |

It's definitely worth looking into. Depending on who you talk to, they can be very helpful in matching credits for you. Seeing as you already took a PE class, there is a good chance they will grant you credit. You just need to make the effort. 11/11/2010 12:55:11 AM |

take step aerobics online...you show up for a couple hours at the beginning of the semester and another couple at the end of the semester...that's it. Oh yeah, you have to log on to the class website once a week to update your "progress" from exercising at home. It's pretty much as close to a non-class as you can get... 11/11/2010 1:37:44 AM |

fitness walking is no joke. I'm a pretty athletic person but to get an A in that class is nearly impossible. I think only one person did and she was on the varsity soccer team. I didn't know shins could hurt like that. 11/14/2010 4:11:25 AM |

step aerobics actually isn't bad at all. you don't even do 'step aerobics' every class. You do a variety of things, from high-low interval cardio, circuit training, a couple of days of dance, stability ball work, etc. It's much more than just using a step (maybe 4 classes out the semester used it) 11/14/2010 2:19:40 PM |

wtf
fitness and wellness was a fucking cake walk. Take for an easy A, and make your normal gym time count for something. You only have to the fucked up machine workout once. Read the book, show up to workout in correct attire, get tested in bench, lat pulldowns and the leg press, and run a mile (or was it a mile and a half?) Easy shit.

My 2 PEs were fitness walking, and target archery. Both pretty easy As (archery was awesome, walking was a waste of time but very doable). Hopefully you can get around it since you've already had so many, but there are some not terrible options if you do get stuck with it. 11/14/2010 10:28:15 PM |

I transferred in with two PE's from another college and was initially told neither would transfer. I called the professors at the old college and got a copy of the syllabus from each class faxed to me and then made an appointment with the Dean of PE at State. He looked at each syllabus for about 1 minute and told me they looked good then gave me a note to take to the registrar saying to count the PE's, I never had to take one at State and it really wasn't that difficult, much less of an effort than taking two semester long PE classes. I had several other classes as well that initially either didn't transfer or transferred as electives. I did the same thing with all of the other classes and got almost all of them transferred as exactly what I wanted them to transfer as so that they fit into my degree audit.
Moral of the story, if you just deal with the computers you'll get screwed but if you go talk to real people you'll find they're usually pretty helpful and understanding. 11/18/2010 2:05:18 PM |

if you have to take one of the 100 level PEs, I really enjoyed dance aerobics. much better than walking laps 11/23/2010 5:34:25 AM |

^ the only one open that fit my schedule was a 2 hour step aerobics class... but at least it's only half the semester.
I'm going to try to meet with the Dean - just emailed my former school to try to get a syllabus for each course. 11/23/2010 2:51:32 PM |
