(or any type of head accessory that you wear during cold weather to keep your head warm)
This is to settle a argument.

Never really say toboggan, that's just me.

growing up in the south with family from the north always made me super confused.
i call the hats toboggans sometimes. but usually i just call them hats. the hat form really rarely comes up in my conversations so...when i think toboggan i think:

or the wooden ones, but we always had a plastic one. our wooden sled was the kind with runners.
i think the dictionary says toboggan = sled. for srs.

I call that a toboggan, but I'd also call the sled a toboggan if I ever saw one.
It's a matter of context. You don't slide down hills on a hat/beanie/cap, and you don't put sleds on your head. 11/14/2010 3:07:04 PM

^^It's a specific type. A toboggan is a sled, but not all sleds are toboggans.

I would just call the hat a "beanie" or "beanie cap", generally, but in my experience that just confuses people even more because they've somehow never heard the term.

it really rarely comes up that i need to use the term for a hat.
whenever i'm talking about a hat like that, i'm just like "oh i need to find my snowboarding hat" not "i need to find my toboggan" because i seriously grew up using that word for a sled. plus, i don't really wear those types of hats frequently (unless i'm snowboarding, really. or in the snow. which is like never anymore).
and for some reason the term "beanie" reminds me of a 7th grade stoner, so i don't use that word either 11/14/2010 3:22:18 PM

^^Which is exactly why people get confused when I say beanie. They might not say it, but I just know they're thinking "but there's no propeller on my cap"

I see "beanies" as being oversized yarmulkes. Same thing with a "skullcap". A skullcap is a fashion accessory (which a toboggan can be)...skullcaps won't keep you warm, toboggans do. 11/14/2010 3:23:43 PM

yea i get that, too
a beanie (the 7th grade stoner kind) and skullcaps are def accessories in my book
and a winter hat/toboggan is something you actually wear for function 11/14/2010 3:24:40 PM
