So this question appeared on a form I'm filling out, and I am 1/4 Spanish.
I'm kinda confused why they would have a special question for people from Spain...? When did they start caring about that?
Also, does 1/4 qualify me to check Yes?
I've checked No for now, but if there is a compelling reason why my Spanish background would matter, I'm all over the Yes box! 11/18/2010 3:19:18 AM |

Yeah, I'm gonna assume the "Spanish" part is for people from Latin America who identify more as European than African or Indian.
But I wanna rep my Spanish background so bad! 11/18/2010 3:31:32 AM |

it's probably going by self-identification
so you're probably fine to tick off the 'Spanish' box if you want to 11/18/2010 5:23:40 AM |

I think you should ask yourself whether you like tacos and burritos. The answer lies within. 11/18/2010 7:45:01 AM |

I'm 1/4 Cuban. I had a census person come to my door because I didn't fill out the form. She asked me specifically if I was Cuban. Not latin or hispanic, but Cuban. I said I was 1/4 and she said it counted. Sometimes I list that I am hispanic and sometimes I don't. It depends on what form I'm filling out. 11/18/2010 12:12:22 PM |

Same here. My fathers side of the family were French and Spanish colonists that settled in Cuba. They all looked pretty caucasion. No one ever believes that I'm hispanic because I'm not 5' tall with brown skin and a dirty mustache. 11/18/2010 12:15:29 PM |

I think it tried to cover the basis for what terms people use to mean "Hispanic"; it's like when the Census used "Black, African American, or Negro"
IMO "Latino" is too broad, because if interpreted as "from a place where Latin or a derivative is widely spoken" then it would include Italy, Brazil, Portugal, France, French Canada, Switzerland, Romania, and some other places...
while of course "Spanish" is too narrow, but then again many a person thinks "Hispanic" means "Latin-American" (which incorrectly includes "Brazilian" and excludes "Spanish" and "Filipino") 11/19/2010 5:45:58 AM |

I was pretty sure "Hispanic" just meant "Spanish-speaking"
while the (much less-known) term for "Portuguese-speaking" was "Lusophone" (in analogy to "Francophone" for French and "Anglophone" for English)
and at least the AP advises to use "Brazilian" or "Portuguese" or "Angolan" or "Timorese" instead of "Hispanic" or some other generalized term for people from the respective Portuguese-speaking countries Brazil, Portugal, Angola, and East Timor 11/19/2010 5:54:28 AM |
