What do you guys think about this?
They say it's even more profitable than drug trafficking, and relatively easy to do. For example, buying the cigs in NC or VA where they are relatively cheap, and driving them up to states like NJ, or NY where a pack might cost > $7.
What about the claim that this funds TERRORISM? BS? No?
Is this a clear cut case where certain states (that imposed these heavy taxes on cigarettes to curb use, and boost funds) brought this problem entirely on themselves? What about the violent crime that is brought on by this?
What about laws dictating what happens when people get caught doing this? In and of itself, a victimless crime?
thoughts? 11/18/2010 10:48:13 PM |

this was a common occurrence when i worked at a truck stop back home...
3 times a week a bus driver from miami and a russian couple from ny would stop and buy their daily limit of marlboro products...the limit being 299 cartons or 10 cases minus 1 carton...
they could get them here for $20/carton...and selling them in NY/FLA for $50+
299 was supposed to be their daily limit, period...but they would stop at every dealer in the area and do the same thing because other truck stops had RJR products cheap...
they never paid with anything larger than a $20...it was mostly $5s and $10s...
it was great fun when they all 3 came in on the same day (usually friday evening)...
$15,000 in $5-$20 bills 11/18/2010 11:00:03 PM |

he only did it once or twice, complained that it was "too much work"

There is a Stuckeys/Dairy Queen on I-95 between Gold Rock and Roanoke Rapids that used to be a huge cigarette outlet. I can remember stopping there back in the day and seeing station wagons literally stuffed from the driver's seat to the tailgate with cigarettes. 11/19/2010 8:58:22 AM |

Depends on how involved your smuggling ring is. A lot of people sell them to gas stations who also would be happy to avoid state taxes. 11/19/2010 9:06:57 AM |
