I'm not just referring to sports...

How do the in state rivalries stack up?

For a lot of outsiders looking in, it feels like NCSU is a 3rd wheel/jealous little brother type to the the UNC/Duke rivalry. I'm not disrespecting. I root for NCSU when I see them playing on TV and think UNC is a fag haven, but I just get the sense that NCSU is the Tampa Bay Rays in the RedSox/Yankees world.

What is the general consensus around the state down there?

UNC/Duke is a bigger rivalry, but mainly because of basketball

and national exposure

fair assessment

if actually won more often, people might pay attention to us...but we don't, we suck (in general)

unc/duke is a bigger rivalry because they didn't get saddled with years of ncaa sanctions at a time when all three teams were competitive and they left state in the dust while we dealt with a combination of hamstrung recruiting and les robinson's personality

Yea, it kinda depends on what decade you are looking at.

recent history hasn't been that kind to us in Bball against either Duke or UNC. In Football I'd say we have a good competitive rivalry going. unfortunately both UNC and State's football teams are somewhat irrelevant outside of north carolina

^^ if there had been no shoegate, we'd be hanging with both programs right now

as it stands, we're catching up slowly

i'm not going to discuss whether or not we'd be there already if we hadn't ditched herb, because it's only a matter of timing, not a matter of herb's quality/lack thereof

i don't think anyone is delusional enough to argue against the UNC/Duke Bball rivalry being the biggest in the state, and as others stated, that's because both teams are nationally relevant year in and year out.

Back before Coach K, NCSU/UNC was the big Bball rivalry in the state for the same reason.

If NCSU and UNC are both nationally relevant in football for a sustained period of time somewhere in the future, it would almost certainly eclipse the UNC/duke bball rivalry just by virtue of college football having a larger national following than college basketball.

but we ain't there.

In terms of actual fans it's mostly State and UNC fans...with a few Duke fans sprinkled in. But, yes, in basketball State definitely takes a back seat to UNC and Duke.

Outside of NC, most people have a difficult time differentiating between NC State and UNC.

What school is it most prestigious to graduate from?
What majors are each school known for?

It seems like NCSU is more of an engineering school.
Duke is more known for its graduate programs (Law/Med schools).
Not sure what UNC is known for. Journalism maybe?

People here in North Jersey and NYC always think I am referring to the Tarheels when I say NC State. I know it means nothing to them, but that shit is uber-frustrating.

Yeah, unfortunately, UNC simply has greater name recognition across the country. While NC State has strong engineering programs, UNC has greater overall prestige.

Their law school and journalism school are regarded very highly.

And a lot of non-NC residents think NC State is synonymous with the Tarheels.

so in the west we got:

AppState v. UNC-Asheville vying for the "Dirty Hippie" Cup

in the triangle we got:

Duke v. UNC vying for the "Who is more nationally relevant" Cup

NCState v. themselves for the "We can't stop stepping on our own dick" Cup

and in the east we got:

ECU v. themselves for the "We can't shed the party school rep" Cup

lawl.

but seriously, I thought NCSU and ECU had some sort of haterade to each other?

and what about Western Carolina University, NC A&T, UNC-Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Wake Forest, Fayetteville State University (lol), Shaw, Campbell, etc?

Companies want NCSU graduates more than UNC graduates. Although widely known by NCSU students, the Wallstreet Journal confirmed it.

It is very interesting to me that UNC people sneer at NCSU as a rival (kind of like how we treat ECU) but when we are playing them, you can't get them to shut the hell up about beating our ass or the attempt of doing so. Not to mention the painting our tunnel light baby blue when there is a victory on their end.

UNC is more widely known across the country and considered more academically prestigious due to them having a law and med school IMO. With the way the world and economy is changing at this point, the more in demand jobs are going to be in more technical/engineering type fields. That is why we've seen more things like the WSJ article labeling grads of NCSU more in demand than those of UNC.

And in terms of athletics, it used to always be NCSU/UNC. We can thank the N&O, Peter Golenbock and our university's leadership in the early '90s as why we have sunk into absolutely obscurity for the past 20 years in athletics. Regardless though for UNC fans to say we aren't a rival is ridiculous. Just because Duke has supplanted us as one of the two basketball powers in the area for the last 20 years doesn't mean UNC is oblivious to NCSU. It's just that good old UNC superiority complex.

And what week is rivalry week? There are rivalry games played throughout the year, is there one specified for rivalries. Regardless, this game has been played just about every week of the season minus Week 1 over the past 10 years, so its hardly being played "during rivalry week every year", whenever that happens to be.

UNC gets its advantages from a history of firsts (first public school in the US, first school to put its newspaper online), the Wal-Mart/Jordan/ESPN advantage (if ESPN had been around during Thompson's career, NCSU would be consistently relevant, maybe even media darlings), which leads to higher nationwide brand recognition. Finally, they do have a nasty habit of controlling the local media probably nationwide as well, so they can constantly paint State in a bad light, without really any recourse. Also, they're really good at basketball. Really really good.*

It's a nice little positive feedback loop that they've built for themselves.

If by academically prestigious you mean they are cool for being the first public school yep unc wins as far as difficulty getting in and average starting salaries are concerned we eclipsed them 01-06 I don't know what's happened since.

All state schools are about the same prestige. UNC grads will tell you different but honestly it means fuck all once you've been working a couple years.

On an academic level I think we're all very collegial in the triangle area. The whole inter-institutional thing where people at NCSU, UNC, & Duke can take classes at each others universities, and check out books from each others libraries. And to take the classes is simple because you still only pay your university for the class just like normal, and Raleigh is better than Charlotte, and for all those reasons and more I think the rivalry is more sports based than anything else.

Although I know Duke & UNC both have hospitals, I wonder how much of a rivalry there is in their medical programs? I know the Technician does their annual spoof of the UNC school paper. Does UNC return the favor at all?

Just felt the need to chime in and say that WKNC, State's radio station, broadcasts at 25,000 watts, whereas Carolina's WXYC broadcasts at a whopping 1,100.

That's NPR though, its not really school specific. Whereas 1360AM, which broadcasts at 5000 watts, is much closer to a "unc station" if we are branching out of student focused radio stations.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WCHL_%28AM%29
Quote :
"WCHL is a radio station based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina broadcasting at 1360 AM. It is the flagship station of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill radio sports broadcasts and an affiliate of the CBS Radio Network. Much of its programming is geared towards the Chapel Hill/Carrboro community, with a focus on local news and community affairs programming."

Quote :
"Callsign meaning: Where Chapel Hill Listens"

http://www.wchl1360.com/

And there slogan is "Chapel Hill-Carrboro's News, Talk, and Tar Heels Station"

Still they aren't student operated, or mainly university focused (its mostly local news & national programming), so its a little bit of a stretch to call them a UNC station, its a really big stretch to call our NPR station a Tar Heel Station. Aren't they based in Durham now anyways?
