North Korea just fired over 200 artillery rounds at South Korea. Reports of multiple homes being destroyed and possible casualties. Largest attack since the 1953 armistice

Hmm.

It's too soon for N. Korea to attack. They haven't harnessed the power of a nuclear weapon yet.

I think it's a set up, by someone, to get the world on the opposing side of N. Korea in order to attack them before they harness a weapon with nuclear capabilities.

The timing is just too coincidental.

Fox News hasn't yet found a way to blame this on Obama so it must not be important.

they don't have a dozen. they had a couple real dirty plutonium (doc brown) bombs.

now it's clear they can enrich uranium to make more powerful warheads. it's not clear how long they have had this capability nor how much HEU they currently have.

plus...

I'm using Grumpy's quote from the boat sinking thread to put this in context. Is this significantly different than past incidents?

I don't know enough about the history of conflicts and attacks to know if this is truly of a significantly larger scale, or if this is just the way the media is reporting it. Same as they do with polling numbers for politicians.

If a president or governor or whoever drops from 49% to 48% approval, they run the story "worst approval rating they've ever had" then it goes up to 50%, no coverage, swings down to 47% and we get the "worst approval rating they've ever had" story again, and so on in that fashion where very little is happening, but a sensationalized description is used every time.

Not to diminish any loss of life at all, but from what I've heard so far this doesn't sound like a war-starter.

Yeonpyeong island sounds like a shitty place to live unless you like artillery shells landing in your living room. It's south of the line that divides the Koreas but it's much closer to the mainland of North Korea than South Korea.

Everyone in Seoul.

Serously, NK has the largest artillery force in the world (no hyperbole there) and Seoul is only 35 miles from the North Korean border. Some estimates say they could level the city in 2 hours with conventional rocket fire, they don't need nukes.

NK has generally saber rattled in the past whenever they needed food or humanitarian relief. They'll poke SK, we say "if we give you rice will you shut up" they do, they then turn around and claim a victory and the cycle eventually repeats itself.

Business Insider has a pretty good article on it: http://www.businessinsider.com/why-south-korea-is-afraid-of-north-korea-2010-4

(Not saying I wouldn't want to get the hell out of dodge myself, but to imply that it is OK that the lives of thousands are oblitarated because of the ambitions of a tyrant so long as your ass is back home is f'n selfish)

What the hell is she supposed to do? Study up on military training real fast and go Rambo on North Korea to save everyone's life?
Or do her best to finish up with her job there and leave when she is supposed to leave, all the time hoping that nothing kills her before she gets to come back to America?

I see nothing selfish with her saying that she wishes she would be gone from South Korea before crazy shit happens. I honestly think a normal human being would want to get the fuck out of a place like that if they could.

I mean I guess I could see the way she phrased it, but it's not like we don't all know shit like that is going to happen eventually, I'm sure she knows this is something that is going to happen regardless, just like the majority of us, Mr. Ronery is determined to get the world's attention.
It's just the fact that she gets to come back home in 10 days and she was kinda hoping that nothing like that would happen while she was there.

But why should she feel guilty that she has the opportunity to leave? She went over there to teach English and now she wants to get the hell out before she gets blown up.

The normal human being is selfish. The instinct of survival we have leads us to want to take care of ourselves and our young. It is how you act on these desires that makes a person truly selfish or not. I didn't read her comment and first thing think "wow, that is selfish," but I won't argue that it isn't a selfish thought blurted out on to the intarwebs, because, quite frankly, it is. I also won't say I don't think I would be running the same thing in my head if I were her. I mean, everyone wants the last slice of pizza, but not everyone is going to reach in and grab it.

Well I can honestly say that her comment wasn't meant to be "I don't give a shit if you blow up these people, just let me get out of here before you do it"

It was meant to be, "I really hope I don't die 10 days before I get to leave"

I disagree completely. The whole post could've been a worded different not to give off that impression (I'll spot you the fact that it does come off as a little privileged), but I see nothing selfish about valuing your own life over a conflict you have absolutely no stake in.

Wanting to continue living and feeling empathy for others who are suffering aren't mutually exclusive concepts, as you seem to imply.

I'm sure if you found yourself, as someone with no military experience or training, and with no purpose in being there that related to something like war fighting or journalism, in the middle of someplace like Afghanistan's Korengal Valley where a conflict between the local population was rapidly escalating, your priorities would look similar: 1) GTFO, 2) Worry about everything happening there once you're out of harm's way.

It's already been said, but is worth repeating: if you have no skills or purpose related to resolving the conflict, you're only foolishly endangering your own life by remaining in an area like that.

Yeah, maybe the girl is being sarcastic? Or maybe she hates being there in S Korea and just wants to gtfo.

I DEMAND SHE MAKES A PUBLIC APOLOGY AND WRITES A LETTER TO [LEADER OF SOUTH KOREA] IMMEDIATELY

I think yall are going about this the wrong way... I don't think you can argue that it is a selfish statement or not. You can argue, however, that it is just someone we don't know posting on FB and we shouldn't give 2 shits about what they are saying/doing

but then again, that's just my personal opinion

Quote :

I completely agree with this. I'm just saying that the post did not express her concern at there not being a war, but at her just not being affected by the war.

If it is going to happen, by all means, get your uninvolved ass out of the way, but at least have some empathy for the people who can't.
