for the record, it's called "filling" not "stuffing"

and don't even try to call it "dressing"

Can we at least agree that both stuffing and filling make sense? Dressing is just way out there

Filling makes no sense.

Unless we're talking about creampies.

I love when people use my name like its an insult.

Like I get offended at being properly addressed.

Its stuffing if it was cooked inside the turkey, dressing if it was NOT cooked inside the turkey.

Never heard it called filling... Twinkies or pastries have filling, turkeys do not.

Traditionally this dish was what was cooked inside the turkey, i.e. "stuffed" inside or used to "fill" the turkey.

How the fuck does "dressing" make any sense?

^ filling is a very regional term, mostly used in the northeast

I get it in contemporary terms

but traditionally the "stuffing" or "filling" was cooked inside the turkey.

i've never heard it referred to as filling either. it's dressing when it's made outside the turkey and meant to dress up the bird/give it a MUCH better flavor when eaten together and stuffing when it's made inside the bird. i don't know how to make this any simpler, but dressing is the only way to go.

I usually call it stuffing but dressing is also acceptable.

Never called it filling, don't even know people who call it filling.

Upon further review, I have probably REALLY regionalized myself:

Quote :
"'Dressing' seems to be the southern and southwestern choice, 'stuffing' the preference of the northern and central regions, and 'filling' might be strictly central Pennsylvanian."

http://fishcooking.about.com/b/2010/11/18/dressing-stuffing-filling.htm

WHERE MY FELLOW CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIANS AT???

Stuffing = in the bird
Dressing = made in a pan on the side
Filling = that post-Thanksgiving-gorging feeling

Sure there is, considering that most people don't cook the dish inside the bird anymore. So you are saying that Stove Top Stuffing is, in fact, dressing?
