pointing up or down?

I always load with them up. That's the way pops does it so I learned it from him. Errbody else I know seems to load with them pointing down.

TWW taught me to separate my silverware. I used to put all forks/spoons/knives together, but you smart asses taught me that if you mix em up they won't nest together.

I always load them pointing down except in our dishwasher at our lake house my mom insists that I load them pointing up (something about the dishwasher, I've never really bothered to understand it) and I can't stand it for two reasons

a) I've stabbed myself several times while trying to unload the utensils

b) I have to hold the knives by the dirty blades to put them in the dishwasher and get sauce/food/other crap all over my hands in the process

Putting them in blade down just seems to be an all around better system

i always loaded them up when i was younger. my mom always said it made them get cleaned better (like no crusty stuff left on them) but i don't know if that is true or not.

ANYWAY

to avoid getting stabbed (and because this is how my parents always did it) i'd remove the basket of utensils, and dump on a clean dishcloth on the counter. we also did it this way cause we had 2 sets of silverware. a shitty one we used for, i don't even know what. and then our everyday. so we had to sort them. and this also helped if you took 'em fresh out so you could pat them dry before putting them away

after living on my own, i started putting them in face down because that seems to be how every other person in america does it.

so i'm still on the fence about the right/wrong way.

but i agree...i'm more worried about being stabbed by a fork than a butterknife. but i also still dump out the basket when unloading silverware so getting stabbed isn't a huge worry to begin with.

This thread changed the way I load. I had never considered that utensils might get cleaner if I loaded them pointing up. I just tried it for the first time. I still pointed the sharp knives down.

Everything pointed up. My compartment for utensils even has slots that makes them impossible to use unless you're putting your forks/spoons in handle down. I feel like the eating part of the utensil gets a direct blast of water if placed handle down, and when I go to empty the dishwasher I wash my hands with soap first.


My basket is like this so it would make more sense to load it pointing up. What about the rest of your dishes? I guess if you're worried about contaminating your dishes you just may be a shitty handwasher.

I put forks and spoons in half up, half down. Don't want anything nesting inside each other when the dishwasher is running. Butter knives get thrown in pretty randomly.

^My guess is that more of the water spray gets to parts you put on your food/in your mouth when it isn't obstructed by the plastic basket.

Nesting is definitely real. I used to separate forks, spoons, and knives by basket because I can be a bit OCD about those things, but since switching it up, no occurrences of spooning spoons.

I point the knife blades down, everything else up. I think pointing up gets things cleaner but I don't want to cut myself on the end of a steak or paring knife. I wash my hands before unloading so it's not a re-dirtying issue. Good knives (of which I currently have very few) and any large knife, whether good or not, get hand-washed.
