Megabus is starting to run out of Durham to Charlotte, Washington D.C., and Richmond.

Was just wondering if anyone has ever used this transportation seeing it is cheap as hell.

[Edited on November 24, 2010 at 5:00 PM. Reason : Round trip for $5, including fees. Am I missing something?]

The catch is you have to board the bus in Durham in the middle of the night

If they start a route from here to NYC I'd consider doing it. I hate trying to find parking in NYC when I go up there

I live in DC and my wife and I have used it to go to NYC many times for even just a day trip. It works great and is significantly cheaper than even driving. I would recommend it.

I have taken both Megabus and Boltbus. They both had free Wifi with power outlets, and one of them had leather seats. It was pretty fantastic.

There is no catch, but the business model works on this: as tickets get bought, prices go up. They aren't going to stay at $1, so you have to buy early to get the absolute best deals. Often times seats will still be quite cheap even late, though. IIRC I got a ticket from DC to NYC for less than $20, and that was like a week before the trip.

this is very cool...even the "prices go up as tickets are purchased" business model...because $20 from raleigh to DC is still pretty good (it's about what it would cost me in gas, one way)

The Chinatown bus (Sky Express) that runs from Raleigh to NYC is from what I've heard quite sketchy and unreliable.

A large group of people in civil engineering are using this to attend a conference in DC soon. Some have used it further up north and said they had good experiences. The reason the prices are so low is because they apparently don't have actual offices so they have a much lower overhead than other bus companies.

I have taken it from Boston to NYC for $15, it's a pleasant experience. The drivers know how to get you there quickly.
