Ha...that's ridiculous.
I feel like PKAs were pretty average when I was at State. They had a lot of members and had big parties...but they had a lot of members because they were pretty easy to get into and weren't very selective. They had a good share of degenerates, which this thread seems to prove. My roommate scored all of his drugs from PKAs.

Greek life's a waste of fucking time if you're at University for the reason you're supposed to be at University
if you're there because we treat universities as tech/professional school, then I guess it's a good idea because it gets you sweet social connections. Frat connections seem to hook up a fair amount of talentless idiots with decent jobs 11/27/2010 12:38:54 PM |

I was more or less kidding. I have nothing against people who didn't go greek, and I can understand why a lot of people have a stigma against frat boys/soro girls. GDI was just a term thrown around for people who didn't want to join, it can be used derogatorily. I used it to simply describe people who aren't greek and seem to have a beef with it.
It's funny when people write off greek life as "buying your friends". The money often goes to productive shit like alcohol, parties, housing and other events. Joining a social club like a frat exposes you to many more people and opportunities that you may otherwise have not.
You don't necessarily have to join one to be exposed to said social benefits, but it sure does help. Most of my previous jobs were found through fraternal networking. I also received a lot of experience managing a budget, recruiting and organizing a large group of people because I put myself in leadership roles. It has paid off pretty well on my resume and with my skill set.
With all that said... It's pretty easy to hate on greeks if you're a GDI. There's a lot of nonsense, debauchery and overall stupid shit that gets done and portrayed by greeks. However, unless you've been in a Frat/Sorority it's pretty hard to understand how great it is.11/27/2010 1:33:30 PM |

how do you figure? it sounds like paying for rent, food, and parties (which can be bigger and better because you have a large amount of people contributing). I have several groups of friends that were able to occasionally pull something together like a frat party (ie: beer olympics, band parties with 3+ kegs, etc), but those were few and far between.
I mean, what would you say about a group of friends who get a house together, split rent, go in on food together, and split the costs of throwing parties? Would you call those guys "buying each other friendships" or would that be a case of organization towards a common goal?11/27/2010 4:02:36 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
you know how you pay to have bands play at a house and have a keg?
you get decent bands and charge a few bucks at the door
bands get paid, people get beer, everyone's happy
it's called a house show, and there are at least two every week in raleigh
you don't need frat resources or a ton of friends to make things happen
you just have to want to do it 11/27/2010 4:18:42 PM |
Biofreak70 All American 33197 Posts user info edit post |
or you can pay the band with dues and provide free booze to those that come to a party... 11/27/2010 4:23:13 PM |

yes, but that's much more expensive
and people who won't pay a middling few dollars for some beers are probably not people i want to hang out with 11/27/2010 4:24:18 PM |

I loved being in a sorority. I had wanted to be in one since I went to basketball camp in middle school at UNC and saw all the Greek houses and how much fun they were having.
And I love this website - http://totalfratmove.com. It's a little over the top and ridiculous, but in a hilarious way. 11/27/2010 4:24:43 PM |
Biofreak70 All American 33197 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not saying one is better than the other- I'm just saying it is a good way to have a party... If you tell people "free booze, free band," you will more than likely get a bigger turnout than saying "5 dollar cover, 1.50 beer, for those over 21."
I enjoyed frat parties, and I enjoyed going to bars when bands played- they are different things though 11/27/2010 4:26:11 PM |

you don't charge for the beer
you pay the door...that pays for the beer and the bands and some for the hosts
