Former University Scholar and civil/environmental engineering major Will Langley, armed with only a $20 bill and a full tank of gas, is taking to the streets to raise the profile of the growing number of unsheltered homeless facing daily, harsh realities in our local community.

Sure, it's voluntary and temporary homelessness to raise awareness, - but based on his "rules of engagement," what else would you call his situation? Besides, I ran out of space for additional words in the header.

From his blog:

1) I can’t go home. This goes without saying, but thought I’d be clear about it.

2) I can’t go inside the Capstrat offices. A little less obvious, since lots of folks who find themselves without shelter still have jobs to go to. They’re just under-employed, or don’t earn enough to support themselves and their families. But since we have shower facilities inside our office restroom, I wanted to eliminate that convenience for my week. Not sure how or where I’m going to get a shower during the week. I’ll keep you posted on that.

3) My budget for the week is 20$. Plus one tank of gas. No credit cards, ATM cards, etc. I don’t intend to panhandle, and I don’t intend to take a hot meal from someone who needs it much more than me. My plan is to hit the Kroger for ramen noodles, cup-a-soup, or whatever else I can warm up on my backpacking stove each day. I’ll be tweeting my expenses as they happen. I don’t see any problem coming in under 20$ for the week, but it seemed right to set the budget ‘out loud’. Of course, I won’t have the most balanced, nutritious and vitamin-filled diet for the week, but I’m okay with that.

Not tryin' to nitpick, but if having a single Jackson to your name (to last an entire week), nowhere to lay your head, no office in which to spend eight hours a day, no food on hand and only the gas you have left in the tank isn't homelessness, I don't know what is. I sure wouldn't be comfortable in the temporary situation, even knowing I'd be "home" by this time next week.

how does he plan on being an alcoholic or a heroin junkie with only $20, or does he not understand why most people are homeless?

I am pretty sure someone does this almost every year, if not more than once a year.

Shit my suite mate voluntarily lived on Hillsborough St during Spring Break my freshman year. He pan handled and donated all the money he collected to charity.

There was an article a while back talking about how if you ever become homeless, one of the best things you can get with the few bucks you may have to your name is a gym membership.

It gives you shelter for most of the day (assuming it's not 24 hours a day) as well as a place to clean up and shower.

Of course, this is for people who are down and out for financial reasons and not addictions, but I figured it was pretty good advice.

It pisses you off that admission to your gym facility isn't arbitrarily restricted based on income?

The YMCA is a mold more places need to follow. Those who cannot afford a normal membership deserve at least a chance at the services offered by the Y. I'm not saying that membership to a gym is some privilege that should be doled out to everyone, but I'm certainly not going to be pissed off that an organization takes the high road and tries to make their operation, and the great things they offer, more accessible.

For example, were it not for the after school programs, recreational sports, and other activities that under privileged kids can get involved with there, they'd have that much more time to fuck around and get in trouble elsewhere.

how's that? the gym is a luxury. i would rather not spend my time at a place where i pay a premium for the privilege of going if they allowed vagrants in for free.

Hell if I was homeless and had a car, Id be selling that car. Thats a few months of rent somewhere. Plus gas and insurance (or lack of) you are just asking to get it impounded if you get stopped.

Good idea, but bad implementation. I wonder how many homeless have ""backpack" stoves.

Stupid as hell. Real homeless people make the $20 he has allotted for his week in 1-2 hours of sitting on their asses or walking up and down the beltline exit.

At least he's raising awareness of dumbass hippy liberals, so I guess that's got to count for something.

I would add mental illness to this but yes, it seems there is more to being homeless than just "falling on hard times".

He needs to go to a city with more of a homeless problem. I have heard from a homeless man from Raleigh, himself, that it is hard to go homeless in Raleigh with all the help that is available from shelters, charitable organizations, churches, etc. (As much of an oxymoron as that is.)
