Is it really still that bad if you're outside the inner cities of Johannesburg and Capetown? Pretoria seems like a nice place for example

nope. Cape town isn't really bad at all compared to JoBurg. And even in Joburg, it's all in where you are. Like, if you're in Sandton, it's pretty much the Cary of Joburg. On the other end of the spectrum, Soweto is not somewhere you want to be.

Every South African I've met has told me it's an amazing place to visit but a shithole place to live, hence why they moved elsewhere

^ They used to have one in Osaka. It featured a dog circus, dog track and field, and other shit. Then it went out of business and they locked all the dogs up to starve to death

This is my homeland people. I have been there numerous times. Please note that in Johannesburg these animals do not wander the streets. The only real place to go see em is Kruger. I suppose if you lived out in the sticks you could have this dude come say hi, but same shit in this country..just a different animal. Also, here, your chances of being killed/kidnapped/raped/etc.....are just a little bit lower.....

You still don't walk around the Sandton suburbs alone. Everyone there has massive gates and fences around their houses. It's a way of life.

The city-centre of Cape Town might be a lot nicer than Joburg but Cape Town has some of the worst slums in the whole country. The stuff i have seen in the cape flats was worse than anything i saw anywhere else in the country.

If you went to joburg and didnt go to soweto, thats a real shame. Sandton may have posh hotels and 5-star restaurants, but i would still hestitate to walk very far at night. A few years ago when i was there they had an outbreak of carjackings involving a gentelman spraying pool acid on your face before he robs your. The houses are surrounded by massive fences and security systems.

Kruger is great - will never forget that week.

Yes. That was sarcasm. I promise you I'm not misinformed about such things. There was a time when my aunt went to like 8 funerals in a span on 3 months, all homicides.

My parents grew up there (I grew up in L.A. even though I was born in SA) and it is nothing like it was. Nothing. My dad had to go there for business a couple years back and his company hired 2 cars and 2 drivers. 1 to drive him and 1 to follow in case his car had any sort of problem. They might have been a slight bit over the top but apparently it's not that uncommon for business travelers.

Now my cousins live in Cape Town and for the most part, I think they live just fine...but she lives right down by the ocean where it's better protected. You go to the outter areas and you got some issues.

define 'like'. Most who live there don't know any different and have become accustomed to it. A good portion of my family got the fuck outta there if they could. You can't (at least you couldn't, I don't know why it would have changed recently) take your money out of there so for a lot of people, it would have made them totally broke which isn't a good way to move to a new country. For my parents, considering they were 19 and 21 when they left, it wasn't so much of a problem....
