"FORT BRAGG, N.C. --

A soldier at Fort Bragg lost a lot while fighting in the war, but he hasn't given up.

Captain Ivan Castro can't run without a shoelace or a partner like Lt. Col. Fred Dummar.

"I can't run a step without him," Castro said.

That's because Castro is blind.

"On Sept. 2, 2006 the man up above decided he had a different mission for me," Castro said.

Before that day, his mission was fighting the enemy. But on a tour in Iraq, he came too close and a mortar round exploded five feet from him.

"The blast had broken my nose, cheek bone, I had an enucleated right eye, a fragment went in my left eye landing on my retina," Castro explained.

Two soldiers in his unit were killed. Castro was near death and when he got the news about his sight he thought about dying."
