There's an Elder Scrolls 5 thread already but the name was wrong, and now it's official.

The problem for me will come if Diablo 3 is released close to the same time... I will play this as long as I have time before that game takes over my life haha

I figure Diablo 3 won't come out until way later, say 12/21/2012 (according to the Mayans.)

How much of this game is dependent on the previous?

This game is set 200 years later, so probably very little.

None of them have been direct sequels though, you play a different character in a different nation/province every time.

New info from OXM UK

Quote :
"
* There is a perk that will lower the sound of your footsteps.
* Perk for Axe that enables deeper cuts, which means prolonged bleeding. You can hit someone once and they will eventually bleed out.
* Eventual perk upgrade for Maces that will allow you to hit for full damage, ignoring armor stats.
* The article mentions placing runes on the floor (that we know already) but in particular talks about 'lob a frost rune down and if an enemy wanders over it, shards of ice will be launched through its body'
* Telekinesis is an available spell.
* 'No more agility to build up so don't have to keep jumping around to level up' (I assume they mean no longer skills like acrobatics and athletes but they use the word agility)
* When you kill a dragon you're able to absorb its soul which will make you learn a new dragon shout.
* There is a dragon shout called 'Unrelenting Force' which pushes anything standing directly in front of you backwards.
* Dragon shouts have cooldown periods after each shout performed. Individual shouts will have their own cooldown time.
* In the northern parts of Solitude is the Bard's College. The city is a busy port and there's event similar to bonfire night that has the burning of an effigy of King Olaf.
* Windhelm is the largest city. It has a palace that should look spectacular. This is also apparently the hangout for the Imperial Guards who monitor the path to Morrowind.
* Bleak Falls Barrows is a dungeon, with ancient Nord catacombs which features rivers, tree roots coming through the ceiling and light coming through odd cracks.
* 120 Dungeons and they claim that 'no two areas will be alike'.
* Just to re-confirm this fact straight from Todd Howard. Oblivion had 1 dungeon designer with artists doing the rest. Skyrim has 8 dungeon designers.
* Whole world is hand-crafted. Oblivion had some generated landscapes and there is NONE of that anymore used in Skyrim.
* The Shivering isles expansion inspired the team that unique, hand-crafted cities, where no two buildings look the same, was the way to go.
* Example of a 'Radiant Story'. OXM UK recieved a quest to go to Bleak Falls Barrow and retrieve a golden dragon claw antique and take it back to shopkeeper Lucan. If you killed Lucan, the quest would change to his friend Camilla instead.
* The Snow. Has been a lot of confusion about this. OXM UK says that snowfall is dynamic. Instead of a texture with a bit of white added, landscapes realistically get dusted with snow landing in appropiate nooks and crannies.
* There are one-off puzzles in certain dungeons.
* Example of new AI: 'Wolves have a den. Few times a day they go out and do a patrol and hunt in a pack. If they kill something then they'll hang out there. If you go outside and they're on patrol they will come after you. If they've killed something they will guard that and not chase you down as they want to look after it.

Dragon Shouts

The fact about the 'absorb soul of dragons to learn new shouts' has caused a little bit of confusion.

The dragon shout phases, of up to three words, can be found inscribed on the walls of ancient Nord dungeons. When uttered by the Dragonborn (the player) the words invoke powerful magic powers. For many of the shouts you can learn more phases which in turn will allow you to unleash a lengthier or more powerful version of the shout by holding the shout button down.
This appears to be the main way of learning shouts, by finding the word inscriptions. However the OXM article also mentions that you can learn new shouts in the process of absorbing dragon souls. The article doesn't mention anything else about this, maybe not all dragons give shouts, we don't know yet."

Swordplay specifically. Everyone uses swords in the game because Bow and Arrows are a pain to deal with and keeping a decent inventory of arrows in damn near impossible when dealing with a long stretch of enemies without having time to resupply in town in between battles. What they need to do is implement some kind of open wound mechanic where I can stab someone repeatedly in the same area and cause increasing damage with each successive blow.

For example, a bad guy comes up to me and wants to go. Instead of just mashing the stab button over and over, I should be able to slice a chunk of flesh off of him. Then as the battle progresses, I can focus on that area, eventually slicing deep enough that I get through the soft tissues down to the bone and major arteries, which I can try to hack thru for bonus damage and a chance at a crippling strike.

None of this goofy hack and slash gameplay...give me real time damage with realistic blood effects and a better skeletal damage system that rewards repeated strikes.

^it did seem that the bow was underpowered in Oblivion compared to Morrowind, but i never had an issue running out of arrows, also they have said that they are completely revamping the bow system in this one, and one shot can seriously fuck somebody up.

also, they may not be doing your exact idea of hitting the same spot to fuck them up more, but they did say there will be blood loss, which continues to hurt someone after 1 hit.

also apparently sneaking up on someone and stabbing them with a dagger point blank will be a near fatal shot now, to reward your sneak skills.

all in all, i fucking loved Morrowind, Oblivion was great (although i had to play Oblivion on the 360 as my computer sucks, i dont like the console controls as much) but i'm very much looking forward to Skyrim

Archery in Skyrim will be more powerful, but slower. Also you won't be able to run backward the same speed you go forward.

Looks like there's an open wound mechanic of some kind, at least for axes I dont know if all weapons get it.

it was gay as hell if you wanted to be an archer because you start out and the bow kills stuff pretty well (esp from stealth) and then you hit level 4 or 6 or something and now nothing is killable with the bow.

yeah they need to do something about the levelling system as well.

i mean, whats the point if i have the same difficulty killing npc's at lv30 as i did at lv1. i want that "i'm a god" feeling where i can own a whole group of barbarians simply because i have better weapons, mastered athletics and can run twice as fast, jump twice as high, etc. why cant they just make only some enemies level up with you? its like when you're walking along the countryside and instead of a wolf randomly chasing after you you've got this fucking ogre-troll thing that takes like a thousand cuts to bring down.

and i'd still like to see fighting on horseback

I 100% agree. This was one of my biggest problems with Oblivion. On common routes such as the Imperial City to Skingrad, I should have a feel of superiority when traveling the road. Fighting grizzly bears, horned beasts, and other high level creatures became so tedious that I simply fast-travelled (even though i felt like this was cheating). More "remote" areas or mission initiated dungeons are where the leveling system should play into effect.

My other big problem was the simplicity and lack of depth of weapons. By level 15 I had the best of the best for weapons and armon (not including having random enchantments).

A minor nuissance was that when I played shivering isles as a new mage type character, mana potions seemed difficult to come by. I even major skilled in alchemy but it was ofter tough getting ingredients to ensure i could use my magic in battle versus simply slashig the baddies with my mace.

As an alchemy journeyman, finding ingredients (at least in shivering isles) was a bitch. Either way I should not be required to have advanced alchemy skills in order to widely use magic. There should be an adequate stock of potion available for purchase.

i agree on god mode. only issue with that is that at a certain pt, if you play long enough, the game can be too easy. i remember in morrowind, i enjoyed going and killing vivec. had to heal a couple times, but otherwise, no sweat.

You've pretty much so perfectly described the 2nd half of my Oblivion campaign. I played as 100% all strength hack and slasher, and near the end there wasn't a single thing in the game that stood a chance against my sword. But from what I remember reading in the old Oblivion thread, it only got to be that one-sided if you focused all your efforts on upgrading your health/strength/armor/athletics and didn't dabble in trying to have a well-rounded character.

Oblivion leveling was a major problem.

The game actually rewarded you for picking the "wrong" major skills. If your goal is to be a powerful mage, and you pick destruction, illusion, restoration, mysticism, etc. then you never feel all that powerful, because when you level your main skills the rest of the world levels with you, and gains more hit points to counter your more powerful magic.

But if you plan to be a powerful mage and pick class skills as heavy armor, blunt, hand to hand, sneak, mercantile, etc. then when you level your magical abilities you become more powerful, but you don't level up, so the rest of the world doesn't level up either. Thus you become more powerful in relation to the world.

Skyrim is doing away with major skills, so this should be fixed.

^ Yes I realized this and molded my character such that its race, birth sign, and/or some major skills counter the weakness of the class I wanted to be.

For example my 2nd character for shivering isles was a magic using orc with a custom class I called shawman. The orc's natural abilities, selection of blunt weapons, and the sign of the thieve made my magic user more durable in combat.
