If I came across about 100 of them and nobody owned up to them. Could I sell them? Is there a market for them?

Pretty sure you can - eBay is littered with them - And I'll buy a HD DVR for $40 right now.

The card thing is the important bit.

Call and see if the card is deactivated - or plug up your antenna and wait for the system to answer that question for you.

I, too, would like to get my hands on an HD box. DirecTV wants $100 for me to trade my SD box for an HD one

so I can directly replace one of my non-HD receivers with one of your HD receivers and I'll get HD? Sweet, I'll take one. holla at me.

I wonder if Dtv will bill me any extra.

1. you have to subscribe to an HD package to get HD channels

2. I believe that cards are now married to a receiver, so you'll have to call DTV and tell them you purchased a new receiver so they can update your card or send you a new card (shouldn't be an issue)
