$10k?

$20k?

$30k?

$40k?

I'd post my own answers, but if I could make those decisions I wouldn't be making this thread.

No "blah blah blah with a 2jz" nonsense either, near stock vehicles.

^Early Elise models can be had in the low/mid 20's. The more "desireable" '07 are about $30k.
I considered them, but the 993 is/was my childhood wet dream (car wise)

wtf is wrong with you people. you can get a 996 for that much money. in what world is s2000 your choice for a $20k car.

$10k- e36 m3

$20k- evo ix

$30k- i would either buck up and spend more money or save 10k and get the evo ix.

$40k- tie between the one Porsche loves to keep you waiting for and e90 m3.

Yeah, an AP1 S2000 is a lot of car at the $10k price point. for $20k? There's all kinds of stuff I'd buy over an S2k...a C5 Z06, 996, E46 M3, Evo IX. Hell, for $25k you could get a 135i, C6 Z51, Z4M coupe, or an Elise.

Also, I don't really know what I'd get for $30k...everything in that range can either be had for about $25k, or you need $35k plus. Can't think of anything I'd want right around $30k.

OMG, $20k and you get a 220hp gutless Honda, with a useless trunk designed more than a decade ago... seriously?

$10k e36 M3 -Please, too easy.
$20k Evo 9MR/996
$30k-40k nothing here.
$50k 996 GT3

All day long. You can get one for less even, if you're ok with some miles (by miles I mean miles in the gt3 world). 50-55k is for a really prime example of a used gt3.

Hmmm...

I've played around with the idea of a 996 Turbo, to dodge the M96/97 engine issues (and the extra shitload of hp isn't the worst deal in the world). A GT3 would flat-out rock, though...more desirable (to me) even if it isn't as powerful/fast as the Turbo (and still keeps me away from IMS/RMS issues...hopefully cyl cracking, too).

Only bad thing about the GT3 is the lack of rear seats...the "family friendly" aspect of the regular 911 (by my standards ) is very appealing when you have a 4 year old.

Actually I haven't seen a single GT3 for under ~$53k asking in at least 3 months, a lot of them are asking in the low to mid $60k range, some even higher.

As for the rear seat thing, it shares the same anchor points, so it would be trivial to add the backseat back in. Stop making excuses already!

RE: "Cylinder Cracking", the GT3/turbo motors have individual cylinders, completely different architecture, and considered to be beyond bullet proof. However, according to the German TUV research though, the 996 was THE most reliable car in every segment they had a category for, during every single year it was in production (this is for used cars ie: 3-5 year, 5-7 year, etc.). JD Power rated the (used) 996 #2 in overall reliability, with no issues of note for the engine. Pull up autotrader, you see so many of them with over 150k miles. I know I'm not going to convince you, but just food for thought.

Also, talking about the GT3, you're looking at one of the most hardcore sports cars ever built, and criteria #1 is reliability and back seat. Side note, I'm looking at a Jag XJ ARRRRR and I'm actually getting a kick of reading about "timing chain" issues, and "nikasil cylinder liners". One of the reviews I found says power is "startling", and that it easily smokes the rear tires w/the stability turned off. Can't wait for the test drive!

oh no, i don't dispute that the 996 is a super reliable, high-quality sports car. it's just that I can't stomach a $15k engine failure that happens with some degree of frequency, no matter how well the rest of the car ranks on the Consumer Reports scale. It's not that I think it would happen--it's that the potential consequence is beyond my comfort zone.

...and I know exactly what a GT3 is, haha (although I do prize reliability, as I'd DD it and I hate losing money on cars). If I were Porsche, I would have stripped the backseat, too, but I, personally, would take the weight penalty. I wonder if standard 911 rear seats/belts could be retrofitted to a GT3?

I have never found a 996 for $20k or less. In the low $20k range yes. I took the money figures literal, as in you have exactly $20k for a car. What would you get? You're right. I shoulda picked a Boxster instead because it's got a lot more trunk room, more torque, and it's midengine

I bought my 996 at 64k miles for $18,750...put 6,000 miles on it and sold it for $20k on the dot. Many a 996 are out there for sub $20k.

1999-2001 996s are pretty easy to find sub $20k. For some odd reason, the GT3 seems to have gone up in value the last few months to a year. The turbos don't seem to be depreciating anymore either. The 996 Carrera certainly lost some value this year though.

As for the GT3, you can literally bolt/snap on everything you need for the back seats back on. It doesn't save THAT much weight to leave it out either, maybe 15lbs total for both seats and seat belts, I had them stripped out of my first 996.

$30k- probly an even nicer 2003 M5 or a real nice RV toy hauler or maybe a 335i

Sweet, I kinda wondered if that might be the case.

...and yeah, I appreciate factory lightweights, but for my purposes, I'll take it with stereo, AC, and backseats.

Yeah. I've seen a few under $10k. They're not concourse cars, but they aren't beat up either.

I'm not saying I'd blow $20k on an S2000. If I had $20k to spend on a car, I'd find an '04 or '06 S2000 for around $13k-$15k and keep the rest. I didn't know 996 could be had for less than $20k, so I would consider that as well...

993's are about mid $20's.
I'd hold out for '09 Cayman S for <$40k though.
