No they probably would have accepted it. Not a really common American usage, but it's not unheard of.

It's not over - 2 day match. Double/Final Jeopardy will wrap up tomorrow.

I actually see watson losing here - he was choking on those higher value questions and witty word plays.

they are playing 2 games over 3 days.

Did anyone else find it odd that Watson picked the daily double on his first try? It was a $800 value question, and all his other selections were the lowest dollar questions remaining on the board.

^^ I'm guessing statistically pop culture questions are lower on the priority tree than historical questions. Probably didn't have enough info to pull from. Harry Potter was in his process tree though.

I hope they give some more information on the lines on the avatar - are we looking at network traffic? threads? random animations?

I lolled when Jennings got guessed the 20s wrong and Watson immediately rang in a guessed the 20s. Stupid computer.

^^ They actually went into detail on that right at the beginning of the episode. I can't remember what they said exactly, but it was along the lines of the combination of color changes, line frequency, and faster/slower movement were a representation of the computer "grinding" to find an answer.

youtube might be your friend on this one

The other human missed a chance for easy points on the gymnast with the one leg. Jennings said "one arm," watson said "leg," third guy should have buzzed in and said "one leg"

^ This was a known bug.

They said they had fixed it by having the opponents answer fed to Watson just like the question is fed to Watson. It appears that the bug was not correctly fixed.

if that happened, and Watson was confident that he would know the answer, what is the highest amount you can wager (if he had more than $1000)? Could he just be like, "I would like to wager one million dollars Alex"?

After ~12 minutes of watching an artificial intelligence machine answer jeopardy questions you were bored?

That might be the shortest attention span ever.

yeah I know that part, for some reason my brain farted to the point where I thought you could wager whatever you wanted on a daily double. I watch jeopardy all the time, hell I competed in and won this middle school jeopardy thing back in the day, I dont know what I was thinking.

not really. I just would have preferred an entire episode dedicated to the background and then 2 days of actual competition. there wasn't enough AI answering jeopardy questions IMO. (and i'm strictly referring to boredom during the first episode only, not the entire watson competition)

Agreed. While I find all of it very interesting, I don't really care for much more than a 2 minute explanation. On the other hand, I already knew what was going on and tuned in to Jeopardy specifically to watch Watson... other casual viewers of the show may have been like WTF.

That said, it was really fucking interesting to see what Watson can do and what he can't do.

I've always used terminus to refer to the end of the line / where a train turns around. Though I use terminal more for bus/air travel--I was guessing "terminus" all the way though.

I'm in the other camp. I would have preferred 2 1-hour specials on the history of the machine, the event, its predecessors, and interviews with those who made it. Then a 1-hour of the actual competition.

It's interesting that it answered a question with the same wrong response another contestant had tried, I thought they ironed that out based on the NOVA special.

^No. Someone hand types the human contestants' answers so that Watson can learn from them. It was a last minute hack that is exactly as stupid as it sounds.

The fact that IBM's flagship supercomputer didn't bother to use microphones and speech recognition to monitor three individuals to get some real world input is enough to discourage me from ever buying one of their products. It's a glaring oversight. The techs in charge of Watson on that NOVA special came across as imbeciles. I was laughing when the head of the project was getting butthurt because the Jeopardy host kept making fun of Watson's horrible errors.

^^The wagers are based on statistical analysis and extrapolation of all previous Jeopardy wagers and their outcomes.

You can wager up to the highest valued question in that round. So $1k in Jeopardy $2k in double Jeopardy.
