I want to know if anyone can link me to a server that will allow me to download at speeds potentially higher than 10 MB/sec. I have recently upgraded our internet speed to the 8mbs speed my local isp provides, but I have yet to see any downloads break 1.2 MB/sec, no matter how I try (torrent, http, ftp).

Speedtest websites are the only places i've seen high bandwidth, but I don't trust them since I have yet to find any other place I can get high speed downloads from. I just need to find a site that I know is going to give me high bandwidth so I can prove the cable company wrong. Will you guys let me know where I might go? I am not looking to keep what i download, i just want to test the speed.

In other words, I want to see a file being downloaded at a speed anywhere close to the speed we are paying for.

Once you learn the difference between bits and bytes, you'll see that you're actually getting a little extra bandwidth from the ISP if your speed tests are yielding 1.2 MB/s.

Mb/s = megabits per second
MB/s = megabytes per second
8Mb/s = 1MB/s

In your defense, speed test sites don't always make this clear...

I understand the difference, but the people who I have interacted with that work for the cable company have assured me over and over that they are talking and selling megabytes/sec, not megabits.

In that case, just assume they're stupid and don't worry about it too much.
http://www.speedtest.net is more than capable of handling your request...

1.2 MB/sec = 9.375 mbps, so your internet speed is better than advertised.
