That's pretty amazing. I'd like to see how the rest of that set-up goes (are the kegs directly below it? how long are the keg lines?, etc). There's just a lot that goes into running a decent draft beer set-up, I wonder how easy/fool-proof it is. And obviously it's only going to work currently with those plastic cups. It would be nice if you could do it with a nice pint glass...but those would probably be very expensive. 1/5/2011 11:36:40 AM |

Quote : | "The big question, of course, is how it works. You can see from the video linked below that the cups seem to lock into their respective slots before being filled with their payload. There’s a magnet located in the bottom of the cup that can be pushed upward, and falls back into a slot on the bottom when released. When pushed up, the nozzle below fills it with beer. When removed, the magnet bonds to its slot at the bottom of the cup, preventing the beer from escaping. Of course, one imagines that these cups will cost more than your standard cheap-o plastic cup. The neat thing that they’ve done to counter this is to use the removable magnet as a form of advertising; it can be used just like a normal refrigerator magnet and can have a logo or text advertising just about anything, that money serving to cover some of the extra overhead for the special cups. but if the magnet comes out, then they can be recycled just like any other cup
doesn't offset the waste involved in making/using the magnets, but at least the cups themselves can go back into the system 1/5/2011 12:22:31 PM |

Obviously the technology needs to be improved upon to make it more conducive to be used more widespread. It's still really fucking cool, though. Imagine how much faster the bar would be if they had two or three of these dispensers. 1/5/2011 12:25:10 PM |

It would help a little bit...but there are already fast-pouring draft beer systems out there. On difference with this one is that you can just push it down and go. It would save a little bit of time...but nothing that is going to dramatically alter waiting for a drink.
What would be interesting to me is how it regulates the CO2 levels. The most waste you get in draft beers is changing kegs and having too much air in the line. That's where the real money saver for the bar is.1/5/2011 12:34:00 PM |

that looked like it was at a sporting event or concert-type place where you're already paying 10 bucks for the beer. if a "regular" bar were to use this, they'd probably have to pass that cost onto the patrons. Maybe short term rentals would be interesting for trendy spots, but bars that attract customers by charging more are unusual. If you go somewhere exclusive just for the pleasure of not getting slobbed on by idiots or to drink something not widely available, would you really want to drink it out of a plastic cup? I guess it would be cool at a casino, strip club or other place where the cost of drinks are inflated already and something else is already attracting customers. 1/5/2011 12:53:12 PM |
jbrick83 All American 23447 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah...I think this would be ideal just for sporting events, concerts, and similar events. Maybe for an extremely busy bar that sells cheap draft beer...but you'd have to find some way to make it cost effective so you don't pass on too much of that cost to the customer (the type of customers that would frequent a place like this would do it for inexpensive beer).
Still interesting nonetheless. 1/5/2011 1:06:45 PM |

they're not pouring microbrews with that thing. notice the choices: Bud and Bud Light.
this is for concert/sporting events, where they're shoveling out thousands of cups of domestic swill per hour to the indiscriminate masses, as fast as possible. the increased sales would totally pay for the equipment in no time
if you want a microbrew, you go stand in the slow line with the rest of the snobs.

Having an inch of head on that Budweiser would actually make it a lot less filling and customers may be apt to buy more beer. I would be interested to see how much that would have an effect on profit at a large sporting event.
If you drink a $10 beer that hasn't released CO2 you are going to be more full from it and a lot less likely to buy another one....if the $10 didn't discourage you already.
