The teens were headed to a party just before 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, planning to celebrate the start of 2011 with booze and weed, according to a Carrboro police report.
Unknown to the teens, one of their phones inadvertently dialed 911 while they were en route to a party on Oleander Drive. An emergency dispatcher overheard them putting the party’s address into a GPS device and sent a Carrboro police officer to intercept their Jeep Cherokee on Davie Road.
“Put it down,” the dispatcher heard one of the teens say. “There’s the law. … He’s following us.” Sgt. Kenneth Stewart flashed his blue lights and the Jeep pulled over. There were two 16-year-olds and three 15-year-olds in the vehicle.
“Upon walking up to the vehicle, I could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle,” Stewart wrote in his report. Stewart told the 16-year-old driver to step out of the Jeep. He told the boy what the dispatchers had heard and what he had smelled. The driver admitted the marijuana was inside the Jeep.
A 15-year-old boy sitting in the middle of the back seat pulled a baggie out of his front right pocket, Stewart wrote. “I asked [the 15-year-old] where he got the marijuana from, and he advised he would rather not say.”
Officers contacted the teens’ parents to pick them up.
“While the parents were speaking with their children … they stated all of them [had] put money in to purchase the marijuana,” Stewart wrote.
Sgt. Chris Atack said the incident remains under investigation and the teens could still be charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.
Atack said he’s heard of accidental 911 calls, but never a call revealing criminal activity.
“You can set up your phone to have one-digit 911 dialing, and that’s probably I think what happened in this case – somebody leaned the wrong way at the wrong time.”
