I'm seriously pissed that I even paid for that course. It had to be the most basic, elementary, bullshit, waste of time ever. Any self respecting 3rd grader would have no problem with that course. 1/8/2011 7:11:46 PM |

I took a "plants and civilization class." I showed up to the class for the final only to find out that the professor changed the date of the final. I emailed him, and he told me that they played Jeopardy for the final on the last day of class. So, instead of him making me make it up or take an F straight to the face, he gave me a 100. I'm not really sure why I'm posting that in this thread, that was the most awesome surprise I ever got in a class. 1/8/2011 7:13:16 PM |

Let me list them for you
1) ECE 407 with nillson (Visit Study Hall for details) 2) Fortan with Rodman 3) ECE IDK (the first one with Laplace and Fourier) with Dr Devetsikiotis 4) MA 241 (or whatever Calc 2 is) with some old white lady. Expected you to disregard what you learned in class and know equations for like surface area of random shapes without telling you or even hinting at it) Literally one of the questions on an exam you had to know SA for like a sphere, which would've been great but it was asked in a way that unless you had a previous semesters solution from her section, you never would've thought of solving in that way.
I'm like 5% above average intelligence, by no means a genius, and i'm a terrible student... but these classes were all either boring as fuck or taught with unreasonable expectations for their class level. I know that one ECE class was a weedout class, but i think they were testing your ability to understand people who can't write legibly and are terrible at explaining shit. Nilson is a douche. Avoid at all costs. Reads from slides, refuses to go into more details for solutions than is on the slide, gives no partial credit no matter how much work is shown and apparently at the end of the semester knocks off a few percentages of your final grade just because he is an old angry person. Glad i dropped that shit.
I'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.

I hated ST311...it was so boring. And the professor's heavy accent didn't help - I want to say he was Korean, but I can't remember. I wasn't hard, just boring and seemed like a waste. It was a 9am class and spent most the class drinking my coffee, reading the Technician and working on the crossword and sudokus.
CSC 200 was lame as well. I had it right after ST311. The lecture part of CSC200 was not at all related to what we did in the lab part of the course. It was all very basic stuff in lab...Word, PowerPoint, Excel...only new thing was html, which I had no prior experience with. The lecture stuff was more about the history of computers and how stuff worked. Just seemed like a waste to me.

Hmmm tie between Solid Mechanics (With Dr. Hamid Davoodi) and Engineering Dynamics (Dr. Fen Wu).
Both classes had absolutely horrible professors with unreasonable expectations. As with most engineering classes, I ended up teaching myself the material.
And they definitely do still teach Fortran at NCSU for a few of the different types of engineers. And for those that think it is worthless, I use Fortran all the time at NASA. 1/8/2011 9:07:00 PM |

i was actually talking about how awesome this class was today actually. worst case scenario there was a food giveaway at the end of class and best case a guy in a banana costume runs through the back of the classroom while being chased by a guy in a gorilla costume. (yes this really happened) IIRC class was dismissed because the professor was afraid he was having a bad reaction to some medicine he was taking.1/8/2011 9:15:20 PM |

I took a geography class early on in undergrad. I thought, hey, this could have some interesting cultural stuff. Instead, the associate professor who taught it had us go out and draw pictures of the earth on the sidwalks with chalk. She even said she has her 2nd graders do the same thing too in her other job.
It was also the only class to ever literally cause me to vomit (but that's another story).

That same associate professor also gave a speech at the start of her class about she catches about half of her class on plagiarism every semester and has to turn them in to the administration, and that it was really sad.
Later in the semester she tried to accuse me of plagiarism on a paper, for something like not citing a source when describing what sushi was on some international food paper. I tried to talk her out of it saying that common knowledge stuff didn't need citation, and that I hadn't quoted or even paraphrased anyone else’s definition, instead coming up with my own. It finally made sense why she was catching people every semester on plagiarism.
In the end she caved without trying to get me on an academic integrity violation, not because she realized her mistake, but because she felt I "plagiarized" on accident. I think she caught someone else in the class on plagiarism for not stating how they new a certain city was the capital of a country.

well it still makes no sense to teach Fortran for the 2-3 people(that I know about) that got hired by NASA out of NCSU over the last few years. I would prefer a class that benefits the thousands of other engineers not working for NASA, maybe MATLAB or some software used by companies.1/8/2011 9:54:23 PM |

^^^^ Does anything ever happen to these people?
Sounds to me like when she comes to the administration people would just smile and say "Thank you for bringing this egregious disregard of academic rules to our attention" before throwing her report in the garbage.

No idea. I got the hell away from that class and never took any other geography class, or any class with her ever again. That was in my first year or two at state, before I had much experience dealing with bureaucracy or bad professors.
Later I learned, if a professor sounds crazy on the first day or has unreasonable expectations, drop that class and sign up for a new one during the first week. And I have no problem standing up to a professor when I feel they are in the wrong.
I had a history professor who gave me a D on a paper. He put all his comments on the front page and said that I missed many important points. After getting a chance to read his comments, I read through my paper again (it was like 5 pages long) and found almost everything he was looking for on the later pages. So I went back to him and asked him to regrade it, at first he was reluctant, but then he did after I pushed him to.
Apparently he never read past the first page before giving it a grade(which he eventually admitted to). But I had no problem saying I'd talk to the history department administration if he wouldn't take another look at it. He was a really old guy, and I think he retired after that semester, so I think something may have been amiss with his mind, or he had just checked out so much at the end of his career that he didn't care to read the papers he assigned. Ended up with an A on the paper and the class I think.
