Condo dues are generally higher to cover the additional maintenance responsibility the HOA has. In a condo your dues cover insurance on the building, whereas on a townhouse you have to maintain your own policy for about $35 a month. Also, in a condo you only own from the inside walls in, so if you have a plumbing or electrical problem back in the wall the HOA has to repair it, in a townhouse they only keep up the exterior and anything else is your problem.
