I have an old ass Dell Dimension E510 and the fan in the ps is driving me crazy. What is my best option to upgrading/replacement?

eBay a 3rd party replacement. I put in 3 dell OEM supplies before I just got a bigger one from a third party and tossed it in there on our E series.

The dell units always had some weird power rating like 285 watts or something - replaced with a even 350w and haven't seen troubles so far.

You could replace the fan with a newer working/less noisy case fan. Some of the older dell power supplies had 3 pin plugs other wise you will have to solder.

This might be a huge "duh", but unplug the PS and wait a few minutes for the capacitors to drain before you open it up.

Just sayin'.

How long has it been since Dell used proprietary power supplies? I haven't run into on in a lonnnng time.

Just get a standard power supply that has a 24 pin (or 20+4) connector (and SATA cables obviously, which any modern PSU will) and you should be fine.

Find one on Newegg with good user reviews (look for noise issues since thats what youre trying to fix). I would think ~$40 should take care of it.
