Due to slightly elevated triglycerides, slightly depressed HDL (good cholesterol), and prehypertension blood pressure levels, my doc has recommended more exercise and taking fish oil to combat these issues and maintain a healthy heart. She recommends 2400 mg of fish oil and the particular brand I have has 720 mg of EPA and DHA, the two most important of the Omega-3 fatty acids. This generic brand also has been purified so there's no mercury/PCB's/dioxins. I've also been reading that (among other things) that fish oil helps out with ADD and depression.
Anybody have any input on brands, when to take the medicine (with meals, before bed, etc.), side effects, or benefits you have encountered? Thanks! 1/14/2011 3:56:17 PM |

i take fish oil, about 600 mg every other day. i would recommend going with krill oil, or pure untreated fish oil.
probably the best fish oil you can buy: http://www.vitalchoice.com

2400 mg fish oil or 2,400 mg omega-3 FAs?
because a 1,000 mg capsule typically has about 300 mg omega-3 FAs.
i highly doubt it is 2,400 mg omega-3. because if it is, that would mean 7+ grams of fish oil, which would mean 7+ capsules each of 1,000 mg. that's too much.
so if you are taking 720 mg omega-3, you are already consuming 2,160 mg fish oil.1/14/2011 4:54:37 PM |

I picked up some Omega-3 gummies one time. They were the only omega 3 supplement I've found that didn't make me constantly burp up the fish oil taste. 1/14/2011 5:13:06 PM |

no, 7g is not too much... i would do it in a heartbeat if i could afford it.
i just meant that for the OP, it is not necessary as he mentioned slightly out of line triglyceride and HDL levels. 1/14/2011 8:48:40 PM |

I take 6g a day. Fish comes from the Peruvian upwelling region mainly anchovy and sardine, manufactured in Wisconsin. You won't find a better price or quality.
Best part, use discount code DNT276 at checkout to get 5% off.
If you're looking at any other supplements check them out. They probably do packaging/fulfillment for whatever retail supplement you buy you can just cut out the EXTREME UNDERGROUND middleman that comes up with the ads and buy it no-frills.

freeze the fish oil capsules so you don't get that gross fish burp later. my freshman year roommate taught me that.
as for brands  1/14/2011 10:20:28 PM |

Kirkland's Signature is pretty good
I've never had problems with fish burps due to 1 of 2 things
1) I buy the kind with the enteric coating
2) (if not doing 1) I take it with food 1/14/2011 11:05:36 PM |

365 Brand (Whole Foods house brand) is only ~$12 for 250 softgels. Seems to be decent enough: http://www.ifosprogram.com/files/Final%20IFOS-ANS,%20Batch%20511157,%20Mar.%206th,%202006.pdf

If you want to get as much omega-3s as you would from fish body oil capsules, you would have to ingest a lot more fish liver oil capsules, and that would mean taking way too much vitamin A, and that's dangerous.
In brief, fish liver oil is not as high in omega-3s as fish body oil, and has too much vitamin A. Also, cod has become nearly extinct because of overfishing. Don't buy cod in any shape or form.1/17/2011 10:08:59 PM |

I've read that you want supplements with more DHA than EPA. They are hard to find though since everything I've seen has more EPA, but the Nature Made ones have close to an equal amount of both and I figure that's close enough. 1/18/2011 10:06:15 AM |

Go to http://www.gnc.com
They have everything: only DHA, only EPA, mixture of both, etc. 1/18/2011 12:19:39 PM |
