^^The people who are fitness coaches and nutritionists should be background checked as much as any TWW member. The amount of stuff I have heard nutritionists or personal fitness coaches spew out at times is laughable.

Of course, I certainly do not discount all of them and find many of them to be useful for people, just saying the line is blurred. There are certainly some people on here I am in line with more about health/fitness/diet more than some professionals I have run across.

Being healthy.
It's a no brainer.

Eat as many variety in vitamins you can with moderation
Workout with an elevated heartrate for 30 or more minutes (sweating is great),
Eat salads.

BAM!!

Basically, what kind of motivation tricks do they use FOR ENTIRE LIFE LONG COMMITMENT

Strength training on their own, what do they do, how do they mix it up, when to increase weight? How to start for someone so out of shape it's not even funny

Maintaining, once you hit the goal weight how do you maintain? Strength train still? Ever increase weights? Mix up routine? What are some ideas?

And cass pmed me one day about food stuff and it was awesome but what are some easy healthy food tips? Ways you keep things refreshed so you're not in a food rut?

And any other advice for a fatty getting back into it again without personal trainer help.

^^if only it were that easy for everyone or if only that was the solution to everyone's goals of "being healthy"

Depending on the person's current state, past results, ultimate goals, etc. the approach can be very different with both diets and working out. Any personal trainer who doesn't ask these questions and takes a "1 method fits all" approach isn't worth a penny.

My motivation is to avoid becoming a diabetic and to keep my insulin levels in check

And as far as salads go, I have lost over 20 pounds now and barely eat salad. So basically, I don't think that's a requirement to be healthy/lose weight

LIFELONG MOTIVATION doesn't come in a pill or one hour audiobook. Find something that feels good and do that.

if you're in a food rut, the answer is always to find more books/blogs/magazines where people are writing new recipes.

Since you're a fatty, i recommend this. http://haescommunity.org/

vegetables > fish > chicken > beef

Move up that inequality with every choice you make. You will be more healthy.

Don't remain sitting for more than 3 hours at a time, and best to do something as stimulating as jumping jacks with that frequency.

I have bought into the arguments for Omega-3, but either way, your challenge is lifestyle, not supplementation.

Yeah that's good. I remember when I was working out if I didn't go regularly I craved it. Just at first it'll suck and then when I get to my goal weight.

Is this cool? This gym I'm interested in does not charge for personal training (it's the ywca) and they're willing to help out as often as their schedule allows but they don't want us becoming reliant on a pt. Also, they have lots of programs that involve lots of one on one attn to help you reach goals. I have an orientation tomorrow to set some goals and such. Think it's good real shit or hot air? I'd love to learn how to make myself workout.

I know at first when it gets rough I'll want to stop whereas a pt will hold me accountable and push me so maybe at first I'll use them a lot until I feel confident enough. How do you guys push through the fucking pain when your brain says quit stupid ass! lol

I know how much it sucks being unhealthy and don't want to go back to that. I feel better when I am in shape. When I start slacking on nutrition or exercise, I feel like poop. I can't tell you what will work for you to get yourself started, because it'll be different than it was for me. I decided I didn't want to be out of shape anymore when a friend of mine basically said you can keep listing excuses why you are that way, or you can suck it up and better yourself.

Pick a program and follow it. It will give you advice on the increasing weights and whatnot. Maybe New Rules of Lifting for Women would be good for you. It is a beginner program and explains everything well.

If I want a cookie, I eat a cookie. I don't freak out or berate myself or anything if I eat like crap for a few days. I just pick back up and buy some broccoli. Strength training 4 lyfe.

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." is pretty much it. Figure out what macronutrient ratios work for you by playing around with it for a few weeks. I feel way better and have more energy if I eat more fat. Too many carbs and I get lethargic. Too few carbs and I get depressed because I love carbs.

Quote :
"And any other advice for a fatty getting back into it again without personal trainer help."

You know what you need to do. Nobody else can give you the magical motivational words that will work for you so you have to figure that out for yourself.

I do agree with the advice that you shouldn't do anything to lose weight you wouldn't want to do forever. So don't force yourself into a gym if it drives you nuts to go there. If that's your case, find a hobby that gets you active and outside. Don't prohibit your favorite bad-for-you foods entirely because that might make you snap one day. Try to find healthier alternatives if you can, but if those suck, eat a portion of the real thing once in a while.

I've found that the longer you stay committed to a balanced lifestyle (I don't like to say healthy because that has so many different meanings depending on who you talk to), the easier it is to stay on track.

Like for me, in college I stopped drinking soda and juice because I knew it wasn't doing me any favors. Now, I don't even like drinking those things. I primarily drink water, unsweetened tea, and black coffee. I may have a soda once in a blue moon.

Same thing for potato chips. I used to love and eat potato chips way too often. I made a conscious effort to stop eating them and now I don't really like them all that much.

Free classes are great to learn things to do, and if group workouts are your thing, great. But if you're just a 'spectator' then you can still loose motivation.

Get a friend. Not just a friend, but a workout commitment buddy. Share your goals and encourage each other. Use the internet if no one you know will suffice, it's far easier than online dating (or 2 birds with one stone?). Call, and be upset, if the other person doesn't keep to your schedule. Make this clear from the beginning. Diversify your workouts and try new things. Find new groups, go to meetup.com. Treat yourself by doing something that is fun and gets the 30 min of aerobic activity.

Good advice ITT. Thanks guys.

I actually enjoy the gym, it turned into me time and a great destresser. Cardio is easy I do the HITT and it works well. It's the strength training (the most important part) that has me nervous. Maybe if after this orientation I'll have a better understanding and feel confident working it out.

i track what i eat and what I do for workouts on http://www.livestrong.com/myplate

even the bad stuff and keep an eye on my ratio of macros (40% protein, 40%carbs, 20%fat)
try to keep as close to that as possible

take pictures

it also helped me out tremendously to join the beach body thread in the lounge:
message_topic.aspx?topic=606924

it helps keep me accountable and the positive feedback is really motivating

i try to weight train 3 days a week with this program
http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/Starting_Strength_Wiki

i play basketball and volleyball for fun and competition
find groups at your local gym

i run on off days
find a group or another person to do this with for motivation

i'm also training for triathlons, so i will be getting a bike soon

generally, surround yourself with healthy people and cut the ones out that are no good

hope this helps!

If you like the gym I recommend this book:

It has some great regimes and tips in it. Once I have more free time again I'm going to start back up with this book.

check my PM. i have a lot more healthy food stuff to share since last year

also, if you have an iphone or ipod touch, download: Nike Training (NTC). it's a free app that has a "virtual trainer" who talks you through 30, 45, and 60 minute exercises. there's different programs on there and you can keep track of everything you do. there's videos of how to do stuff if you don't know the move.

I like nuts and dried fruits for snacks. I also like protein shakes, but the healthiness of that is unclear and could depend on your goals. It's not so much abut the fats/carbs/protein mix, but it's about the total quantity and quality.

Make soft drinks your personal enemy. Create an exclusive list of restaurants that meet your health standards and stick to it unless you're joining someone else.

Replace casual beverages with tea. When necessary, go to the most lightly sweetened beverage to satisfy your craving. Drinking lots of water hasn't been shown to have a great health benefit, but it can help you avoid other stuff.

For alcohol, technically the harder it is the more smashed you can get with fewer calories.... but moderation is important either way. Remember, many people are healthy in spite of heavy drinking, but it still hurts their health.

cut bad food out of your diet. stick to veggies and such.
no cheese
no dairy
no meat

and SWEAT for about 30mins a day.

WALKING IS NOT A SPORT IT WILL NOT GET YOU SKINNY.

if you start cutting meat/dairy out of your diet, you'll feel awesome. you'll crap normally and it will feel good. you wont feel like a fatass after you eat. you wont be bloated and have to unbutton your pants. aaaannnndddd you'll be doing society a favor by not eating animals.

if you need some sort of "meat", i guess you can eat some fish.

and eating vegetarian doesnt mean you can go eat junkfood just because its meat free.

Yeah I've done cardio for months at a time and havent lost ANY weight even eating healthy and I'm wondering if strength training is the missing link. I'd get so discouraged and give up after seeing weeks and weeks with no weight loss, really disappointing but I'm so over this I just want to do whatever it takes.

This is really good advice. And these days in the Triangle it's a lot easier to find restaurants that have healthy menu options then it was 10+ years ago.

haha, I know this is going to come off sounding bitchy, but I have one group of friends that always choose the crappiest (health-wise) restaurants when they want to go out and eat. I don't know if it's just that they're unimaginative or what but I always kind of groan when one of them texts me asking if I want to get dinner with them. It used to be when they would ask me, "Where do you want to go?" I'd say, "Oh wherever is fine," wanting to be polite since I wasn't the one making the plans, but now whenever I'm asked to make a restaurant suggestion I seize the moment to choose somewhere that isn't going to completely destroy my dietary goals

stop looking a the scale. strength training wont make you any happier either. if you workout like a maniac and gain muscle, you'll still be depressed because you're "weight" hasnt gone anywhere.

are you fitting in your clothes better?

do you feel good? do you feel better than you did before you started working out?

My family has a history of high cholesterol/blood pressure and my dad has had a few close calls with heart attacks/strokes in the past few years (he's 55 yrs old). I don't wanna have to deal with that crap when I'm his age so I've been eating pretty damn healthy for the past two years or so. I've found a shit load of healthy replacements for most fatass foods that taste damn good. Let me know if you want any "healthy replacement" recipes and I'll send you some.

Also, cut out all snacks. Eat three meals a day and THAT'S IT. Here is my typical eating habit:
Breakfast = High fiber cereal (Fiber one and Quaker Oats granola are really tasty and high in fiber. If you do get Fiber One, get the one that is oats and honey. The non oats/honey Fiber One tastes like shit.)
Lunch = Sandwich, some sort of veggie (carrots, celery, something like that), a fruit (usually an apple, orange, or banana. I love oranges so typically it is an orange), and some yogurt.
Dinner = Regular meal with some sort of healthy replacement.

Also, I'd highly recommend swimming. It kind of sucks ass this time of year since it is cold outside but aside from building really good cardiovascular health and lung capacity, it builds and tones muscle. I've got a few good swim plans for beginners if you are interested.

Snacking is a major problem that most people have though. If you MUST snack make it a fruit or a vegetable. Something that is a closed portion... a bag of chips can disappear very quickly.

Oh and by the way, popcorn by itself is actually pretty healthy, just as long as you don't put butter and salt on it, so that's a pretty acceptable snack.

Also, it takes more calories to digest celery than it actually has in it, so theoretically if you just ate a shit load of celery and didn't exercise, you would lose weight.

agreed. very good advice.

and snacking isn't for everyone but you just have to figure out what works for you. i thought having 2 snacks a day is what i was supposed to be doing because that's what i had read but then i stopped bringing snacks and realized i wasn't hungry during those times i ate. why would i eat if i'm not hungry? you just have to know what works for you.

This one really depends on the person. I was at my healthiest when I would leave things like baby carrots/yogurt/apples on my desk at work and would graze on that during the day rather than eating larger set meals.

This is a great example of why you should not take dietary advice from a message board. Go see a licensed, registered dietician. Dont take dietary advice from a personal trainer either. Most people do not have the education and experience to properly dispense dietary advice. Your success for living a healthy lifestyle will mainly be determined by you dietary decisions, not amount of time spent on a treadmill.
