I see them all the time in barbados, almost 1 in 8 cars is something of a tacoma/ranger/frontier size with a 4cyl or 6cyl diesel. Are there any older cars or trucks like this in the US?
I'd spend ~15k if i could daily drive it and still haul my stuff to the track with it, or if it was something old and obscure i'd pay maybe 4-5k if it was a track hauler only, provided I could get an 18' trailer to match (must have extra utility).
I'd rather not have a full sized truck or dually but that's all my searches seem to turn up. also, what transmission options should i look for when looking for something to haul ~6-8k lbs with. I'm only ever going to be hauling 2-3 bikes, tools, gear, and generator inside the camper. 1/28/2011 12:48:26 AM |

zomg you can't brake with those little trucks!
anyways for 6-8k lbs and looking at some tow charts, you're looking at a 3/4 ton 1/28/2011 6:35:27 AM |

^ yeah, i'd kill for a tdci engine...a powershift transmission would be nice, too
the ford focus zetec 5 is a 134hp diesel with fuel economy around 55mpg and a combined average of almost 50mpg
tell me why, again, this car isn't in north america? granted, it's about $30k completely loaded

I don't get why there isn't a decent small truck sold in the USA. VW could make a killing with a car-based truck w/ the 2.0TDI engine. The original Rabbit Pickup made 45mpg and could haul 1400 lbs. 1/28/2011 10:12:13 AM |

I wasn't a big fan of the Jeep Liberty CRD, but was watching it kinda closely hoping it would carry over into other light duty trucks/suvs. I think they stopped making them because of emissions. 1/28/2011 10:28:02 AM |

If the OP is pulling 6-8k on the regular, he needs a 2500 model truck... or possibly a brand new 1/2-ton (but price is $$$$). If it's seriously just a 2wd tow rig, I'd look to dodge (94-up, manual or 'attended to' automatic) or chevy (02ish-up) diesel. ~20mpg average, decent operating costs, and the brakes & suspension are up to par.
in fact you should buy adam8778's '96 dodge, perform some routine maintenance, and BAM - tow rig.

If you are gonna tow, might as well get a half or threes quarter ton. I know a buddy of mine that tows enclosed trailer with two dirtbikes with his chevy s10 from track to track, but I would not do it. Brakes and overall ratio of trailer to truck mass just does not seem like a good idea. All those diesels overseas are not used much for towing. With a fullzise truck you could even have two bikes in the back with the tailgate up. I had that same generation dodge ram that I used for hauling bikes around, and you wont even feel like they are in the back (unless you get the 6cyl). I ended up downgrading do a 4banger s10 to save on gas and make it easier to park in a city. It still will haul a streetbike or two dirtbikes in the back, but I probably should have gotten the 6cyl cause it feels like driving a train.
Of course if you tow a trailer then you don't have to worry about your stuff getting stolen. 1/29/2011 8:51:42 PM |

^^the thing is, they could just throw all the awesome DZL-ness of the mahindra in the body of a old toyota tacoma and it would look so much better

yeah, for a while i'll be just hauling track stuff but eventually i'd like to get one of those RV trailers that has a garage in the back half. for now i'd just be getting a ~1200lbs covered trailer to put maybe 300lbs of tools and parts in and 400 to 1200lbs of bike in.
my minivan is rated to 3500lbs towing capacity but it handles kinda funny with just 1 bike and tools and extra wheels in the back. in a few months i'll be quitting my job to go full time with my company which will allow me to take 3day track weekends just about every weekend of the season, at which point i'll be thinking real hard about an RV trailer and the minivan won't cut it. 1/29/2011 11:07:11 PM |

Can someone remind me again why we don't have more diesel options in general in the US? It's emissions right? Is it those Cali faggots making the requirement too stringent? 1/30/2011 7:24:36 AM |
smoothcrim Universal Magnetic! 18966 Posts user info edit post |
i think it was more to do with the fact that the US spec for diesel refining was inferior to the world's spec so companies didn't want to have to rework their motors for a small demographic since regular gas was so cheap. things have changed but so has the economic client and there aren't a whole lot of new cars being bought nationwide 1/30/2011 10:05:37 AM |

we had a diesel Ranger (4-door cab, 2wd, 5-speed manual) that we could check out and take out into Doha when I spent a few months in Qatar. To be honest, I didn't find it that impressive. It was slow, had a good bit of turbo lag, and didn't really get that good of fuel economy to make it worthwhile.

oh, dude, just saw you want to haul 6-8k lbs? You don't want to do that with a light duty truck, anyway. You want at LEAST a 1/2 ton, and I would get a 3/4-ton if you're going to be doing it with any sort of frequency. You'll probably also want a weight distributing hitch and a trailer brake controller, especially towards the upper end of that weight range.

I like kubota nothin like a diesel tractor with throttle response. At my golfcourse we had a 100hp JD and a 100hp kubota and the JD felt like it ha a 2000lb flywheel on it in comparison to the kubota. Punch it, wait five min, up to full speed... Finally. But the kubota was significantly newer and a huge flywheel would have it's benefits on a tractor. 1/31/2011 4:04:05 PM |
