Hey guys,

I was hired on two years ago with a company as a generic "PC Hardware/Software Technician". Over the last few years I have been through a number of classes/programs to learn a few more systems that I could take over responsibility for. Listed below are the systems I am in charge of, or will be in charge of by the end of this year. The problem I am having at this point is coming up with as concise of a job title as I can without leaving things out.

I manage our Lotus Domino servers in an environment of 150 people.
I manage our Content Manager system.
I manage our Blackberry Enterprise Server.
I will be managing Active Directory by the end of the year.

Amidst all of this, I am still going to be the PC Hardware/Software guy for our company, but I will be picking up a better job title.

The way our salaries are determined at my employer is by a comp ratio based on an average salary for a job title across the market. So with that being said, I'm trying to find a concise job title that encompasses a majority of the work I do. I'd prefer not to have some crazy long job title like:

"Lotus Domino Admin/Content Manager Admin/BES Admin/AD Admin" However if that is what has to be done then I guess we will just roll with it.

Any suggestions for a job title would be greatly appreciated.

Are you the only person there that does IT stuff?

I'd look at comp rates for all of those individually, and see which one is the highest on average, and go with that. This is just your title, not your resume. If you're looking to move on later all of those other things can easily go on your resume to be expounded upon later in a job interview.

Im not the only one in the IT department here -- I've been "backup" to most of these guys on the systems I listed for over a year and I have recently taken over full responsibility for the systems I listed. We will still have a Lotus Notes Administrator who I've been working under, however he is moving to Network Security and will just assist me with Notes/Domino issues as they come up. The guy who is doing Content Manager is also moving to a new set of job responsibilities and will back me up when needed with CM.

We switched off of Novell about a year ago (Thank God) and our Novell Administrator become the default Active Directory Administrator. He will still assist with AD stuff as well, but his new job responsibilities will largely pull him away towards other things, thus the reason they are moving me into an AD role as well.

How many IT guys do you work with that calling yourself "IT Guy" would be confusing?

We only have one IT guy here and no one likes him. I always "accidentally" mess up his lunch order when its my turn to get food.

The industry title would be System Engineer I or maybe II

I think Systems Administrator would best fit what you are looking for. It seems to be more common than Network Administrator which would give you more data for comparison and it would encompass the stuff you listed plus more.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys -- serious or not I am generally referred to as the "IT Guy" but as far as comparisons for salary go, that title probably wouldn't get me far.

I'll look at the Systems Engineer and Systems Administrator things this evening to see how well those would fit, although at first glance they seem to be the best fit.

Check with your HR (if applicable) and with your manager.

There are only a few things that a potential employer can verify with your past jobs, but job title is one of them. It sounds petty and corny, even to me, but down the line, a mismatch can take you out of contention for job.

(IT / Technology / Computer / Network) Systems Admin (I / II)

not quite involved enough to get the III, (also work experience is not quite long enough)

prefix can be any mix or none of those.

i'd go with (something or nothing here) Systems Administrator II

IT Portfolio Manager... or go for the gusto, Chief Information Officer. I'm the CIO of a made up company... it definitely sounds impressive!
