I'm going to miss Bad Boy Duke Duke.

He could jump from the floor onto the kitchen counter like a cat. If you fussed at him, all he had to do was look at you with those black puppy eyes and your heart melted.

In the mornings my parents put the dogs out on the back deck. Well last night someone had moved the gate and didn't shut it. My mom didn't realize the gate was open this morning. So when she looked out the window she saw the puppies running around in the back yard. She went to go get their leashes to bring them back, and by the time she got back to the backyard they were gone and she couldn't find them. So her and my dad got in the truck to go see if they could find them. When they pulled up to the main road they saw Tyson standing there staring at the road, and a truck stopped by the side of the road.
Duke was laying there.

He was my brothers dog.

When my parents got there one woman said that his heart was still beating, but right after David, my brother, got there he died.

I mean it was a combination of everything happening just right. First the gate was left open. Normally when they get out they run either to our neighbor's house or to the store behind our house to just hang out. I big truck hit him. If it was a car or something he may have only just had some broken bones. Duke was a big dog.

The worst part was when we let Tyson see him. He started to lick Duke's ear, and then started to whine. Then he started to nudge his head, like "come on, get up, come play with me"

Then when we wrapped Duke up in his blanket and laid him in the hole Tyson dragged me over to the hole and just stared at it. I had to pull him away so my brothers could bury him. As soon as the dirt started going in Tyson started to whine really hard, then it turned to howling.

These two dogs have never spent a day apart from each other. We cut off a piece of Duke's blanket and put it in Tyson's crate.
We kept their crates together and Duke would always pull some of Tyson's blanket into his crate, so we took some of Tyson's blanket and burried it with Duke.

one of my dogs manages to run out of the house once every few months and goes tearing through the neighborhood and through the woods behind my house. happened yesterday, in fact, out in the pouring rain. i'm always afraid she's gonna get hit by a car

It's the worst, because that is the same way Buster died. Duke and Buster died within 50 feet of each other. We always made sure we were very careful with letting them out. But all it took was one night someone to leave the gate open, and then being used to the gate always being shut for them to get out.

He had a happy brief life! He got to see the ocean, play in snow, and be surrounded by his family for every moment of it. RIP little pup!!

It's going to be hard to get out of the habit of calling for them both. I would normally just call "puppies!" and they'd both come running. Now I can only say "puppy!"

^^David, my brother, is a Duke fan (for some reason unknown to us). And since the dogs are 3/4 boxers he thought Duke was an appropriate name. They can "duke" it out.
