and runs through the neighborhood for a while. she's a boxer/lab so 95% of the time it's pointless for me to try to chase/tackle her

she escaped at 9:30 tonight and i've been trying to coax her back in since. at about 11:45 I decided she had until midnight and after that i was going to bed and good riddance to her. i sat in the kitchen with the back door open and poored myself a glass of wine.

at 11:59 she walked in the door and sat by my feet. bitch got lucky

See - my dog has too much separation anxiety to do something like that. He would also probably think he is missing out on food too. My dog is dumb. Lovable bastard though

I love dogs. Always have. Great relationship with them 99.99% of the time.

But I will beat a goddamn dog the other .01%, and that sounds like what should be happening here.

Haha, didn't think about that.

Please note that my last post should not be construed as secretly referring to women, with whom I have a terrible relationship 99.99% of the time and am always willing to beat.

We "foster cared" for a dog for a week one time, and it would do the same thing. It would always escape out of the large-ish fenced back yard in the morning when we were trying to leave for work/school, we'd chase it for about 10 minutes, give up, only to come back with it sleeping peacefully in the driveway in the afternoon.

what we need is a bluetooth powered zap collar. That way the dog is cool as long as he's with you, but when he runs off past a certain radius zap the bejezus out of him. The bluetooth would provide low power, low range transmission via your cell phone or waistband adapter or wrist adapter.

I could be rich.

some person would forget to take the collar off of the dog and then when the person left the house the dog would be zapped til the owner got back home

i like where ur heads at though

I am thinking this is a 0.01% situation as well. I want to get one of those invisible electric fences now so it will shock the hell out of her if she tries to escape but leaving her the room to run around in the back yard. She does it too damn much and I fear that any leash we get will eventually let her run free. Our HOA mentioned her one time in their newsletter calling her a "pit-bull loose in the neighborhood." She will eventually get shot or ran over. Both messes that are too overwhelming to deal with.

Mr. Joshua Feel free to make degrading comments.

how far does blue tooth go? because most of the training shock collars are rated at .75-1 mile (I wouldn't think blue tooth would go that far...)

head halter (gentle leader) with backup leash (comes with it, connects to collar in case dog slides out of halter, which i've never seen happen)

simple harness

choke chain

use a pinch collar before a choke chain. Choke chains can actually do more damage than a pinch collar, which while barbaric looking, are perfectly safe for the dog.

they also typically work better as a training tool as well

[Edited on February 14, 2011 at 8:46 AM. Reason : Pinch > choke , at least for dogs]

Bluetooth spec is for around 30 feet. And I'm it sounds like I'm talking about the opposite. For instance you put the collar on, pair with your cell phone, hook up a leash and go for a walk. If the collar loses bluetooth signal (wanders past 20 feet or so from you) he/she gets a zap to come on back.

It's just like the radial radio controlled shockers, but mobile - so you can walk fluffy and not have 'em run off.

@quag we use a harness for our other dog, which works well. in this case though, a harness wouldn't help b/c i've determined that it was the spring in the leash which was getting a little loose and detached itself from her collar when she shivered. getting a new leash today.

I think we should get one of invisible shock fences. That way she can run around in the backyard as much as she wants.

I never fully trust electronic fences... I think the real thing is the only real solution (and it has to be done right being high enough, reinforced, and dug into the ground well enough)

I mean, for some dogs they work great, never having a problem- but for others, they just don't cut it (work 95% of the time, but something will come along and the dog will run away after it). And other things (loose dogs) can get in if there is an invisible fence

My dog tried to pull this bullshit like two weeks ago. He was running all over the damn place but I was pleased that I was able to at least keep him in sight. Luckily after about 20 mins a family was pulling into their driveway and their two daughters were trying to talk to him right when he was taking a pewp in their neighbors front yard. I took this opportunity to tackle him.

My dog is too quick to catch and too small to tackle so I use something similar to this

to try and scoop him up whenever he gets loose

dog shock collars are fun.

my friends and i would play the "let's shock each other" game.

the anticipation was worse than the shock. except when we turned it up to 11.

here's what you do: you get an even faster dog and train it to hunt down and retrieve all your other dogs when they run away

I live in a town house so any kind of fence isnt allowed.... My dog still tries to chase and kill any animal he sees, sometimes including other dogs. (he was a stray till about 1 and half we think) When I walk him he has a spike collar and a full harness. The leash is ran through the harness and clipped on to the spiked collar.

When he runs off I can not catch him. He literally runs straight for the closest woods and comes back when he pleases. That wouldnt be so bad but 2 times he came back with a bloody face. Once with HALF a cat...

He has never gotten out of that system of harness and spike collar. He used to be able to get out of his harness alone

This thread is one of the reasons I do not have a dog. Although they are extremely lovable and fun. I had a big goofy poodle come visit me this weekend, I was sad when he left.

my dog only wears a collar when we go camping (and then, it's a glow-in-the-dark collar because she's pitch black)...i rarely bother with a leash because she sticks around wherever i go and will come when i call her

she IS notorious for having to poop A LOT when she exercises...not sure what that's about, but she likes to take a dumb every 15 minutes or so, so unless i'm in the woods or on a trail hiking, i have to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't crap in someone's yard
