I have about 10 gigs of data on my laptop hard drive that I need to transfer to an external drive. The laptop drive is functioning fine, but the laptop locks up after about 10-20 minutes of use (not enough time to transfer the data). Anybody wanna help me out?

Get an Ubuntu LiveDVD

that or pull it out, get a USB-IDE/SATA adapter, and connect both hard drives to someone else's computer

BTW if you're using Windows, did you try Safe Mode, or maybe figuring out why the computer keeps locking up?

Your 2nd paragraph is what I was getting at (I don't have a cable). I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the problem is (mainly just googling), and it seems that it could be any number of things. I don't really care that much at this point. It's a 5 year old thinkpad with 512mb ram, deteriorating screen, and a severely outdated processor. A new laptop will be purchased soon.
