^^ should work. But what are you trying to do? If you are actually looking for good sound quality and wanting to record something to a laptop on the cheap, I'd look into this:

Both xlr and instrument inputs and then hooks up to your computer via USB. 2/17/2011 11:41:51 AM |

presentation.
we're using a convention center - laptop will be running a projector and the place has several of the plugins we can use to bring sound into the entire center.
Output from the laptop will probaby be a dvd/mp3 coming from a dvd player or winamp/VLC.

just my 2c...
There's a couple problems with this setup you may want to test. XLR is going to be mismatched impedence, which over long distance can cause signal degradation if not total loss. The cables you're looking at are meant to go the other direction - from a mic to a 3.5mm (like on a video camera).

That's the cable you want instead of all this conversion junk, but you still may need an inline amp. No matter your solution you may need to consider a direct box to filter out the additional noise that's going to be introduced (typically a high pitched whine or low hum).
*best* solution would be to get a cable to go from their wireless lavalier system directly into your 3.5mm jack. Those are equipped with inline gain already (usually a knob inside) and they can handle low amounts of signal in stride. 2/17/2011 12:29:11 PM |

^ thanks for that.
I will test without a amp and see how it all sounds. This is sort of a one time deal for us, so i doubt i could buy a nice amp, what type would you recommend if sound hum/interference is an issues? 2/17/2011 1:10:54 PM |

Agreed, that what you probably want is a direct box. Also known as DI Box, Direct Injection box, etc. Active is most versatile, though a passive should work perfectly for what you're trying to do. They're relatively inexpensive and would do what you want just fine.
