heartbeat to determine if its being worn? that seems like an unnecessary use of battery, what is the advantagE?

I mean that's a secondary purpose over it being an actual heart rate monitor but yeah wonder how much it impacts battery.

Certainly they could have picked a better way to detect if the thing is being worn, I mean these screens work on capacitance....why not use capacitance to detect if it is on someone's wrist, and use the heartbeat function just for the....heartbeat.

First of all, I don't see why someone would use the watch for Apple Pay, but that's just me...my question is why would that feature be disabled (and no override) if you are not wearing it.

Look I have an apple watch and battery life is not an issue. I wore it most of the day except for a couple hours after work, moderate use with some texts and twitter notifications. Checked weather ever now and then. Also tracked a 30 min run. Just put it on the charger at 47% tonight. It could probably last 2 days if you don't track workouts. Using the heart rate monitor to make sure it is secure has no noticeable impact to battery. Apparently it checks your heart rate in the background every 10 minutes anyway

It's not just apple pay (which is a big security concern), if someone got ahold of the watch they could pretty much have the same access to your info as your phone...messages, contacts, photos, etc.

Mine does not check my heart rate every 10 mins. Most of the time when I go to the heart rate monitor, it says the last one was read an hour ago.

Battery life hasn't been an issue for me either. I've had mine since Tuesday (27th) morning. I've been running (and listening to music) with mine as well.

really? it doesn't require a connection to your phone? i don't think i like that.

and how does a heartbeat sensor prevent that? I'm assuming that in this scenario the person who stole the watch is living.

go to your health app on the phone and navigate to your heart rate. it shows your history. for example mine has readings at 8:07, 8:17, 8:27, etc.

it needs connection to get notifications and updates from the phone. if you lose connection you can still see all the photos or messages that are already stored on the watch.

the heartbeat sensor isnt really the security per se, it really works in conjunction with the passcode lock. so as soon as you take it off and it recognizes there is no heartbeat then it automatically locks (needs the 4 digit code to unlock). it will also no longer get notifications.

i have done this many times with people who want to try it on - i take it off and it locks. the other person can still try it on and wear it, BUT it still needs the lock code to unlock even when the other person is wearing it. basically as soon as it locks it will need the code to unlock even if i as the owner put it right back on.

i must have misunderstood your post, it sounded like you were saying the heartbeat monitor was for apple pay and other security. i still don't really see the advantage of doing that, and I know that heartbeat monitors can sometimes fail if a device is worn loosely or if someone is particularly hairy (at least with other devices), so I'm curious why they chose to do that.

You're right. Sometimes it waits 20 minutes though. Idk why.

Have you had any problems with the activity reported on the watch not matching what the activity app on the phone says? I don't know how to force it to update, I've tried pulling down (to refresh), killing the app, restarting/resetting the phone. Still doesn't match. I noticed this yesterday, but like right now the watch says I've moved 130 cals whereas the phone says 84.

Yep, this is how it works. You also have the option for a more complicated/longer password if you don't want a 4 digit pin. - I think. I swear I saw this as an option during set up. Now I'm not so sure.

yeah my first post wasnt very clear. the sensor is just used to detect if someone (anyone) is wearing it. like i said, once it detects that there is no one wearing it, then it requires a passcode to unlock.

i dont really check the iphone heath app much, but just did and they both say 183 active calories burned. i dont see why they would not be synced cause one has to be the source and one has to just display what the source is reporting. i imagine the watch is the source since it is giving you a higher reading. maybe there is an iphone setting for refresh?

It's not in the health app. It's in the Activity app. It has the same 3 color wheel thingy as its icon. The source is definitely the watch. Right this second, it's caught up & both are showing the same numbers.

Have you checked out any screen protectors? I'm paranoid & kinda think I might need one. My previous watch (a Suunto, way bigger than this 42mm Apple watch) got beat the hell up bc I sling my wrists into door frames for some unknown reason.

ah, i never check that app either, but right now they are synced as well.

i dont see myself using any screen protectors or cases. i think it will just make it look even more bulky (its not too bad but still). i did get apple care+ however, just cause i think this could get damaged easier than a phone.

Open sourcing Swift is actually pretty huge (potentially).

By far the biggest news is native Apple Watch apps along with direct sensor access. This means the watch is no longer tied to an iOS master device, and can potentially work standalone or with any other platform.

I loved all the "new" windowing features were ripped directly from Windows 8 / 10.

And lollercoaster at ^

^^ clearly inspired by Windows (i don't know any mac user that doesn't user a 3rd party window snapping app-- it is probably the best Window UI innovation in 15 years).

Ironically, I spend most of my work day in windows 8, and never use it's app split screen mode, but it looks like apple did a better job integrating this into the OS.

Federighi sarcastically said a several times "now this is innovation" so they are fully aware these ideas aren't completely new. But they're also not billing these upgrades as major feature upgrades, they are saying these are just bug/stability type improvements (kind of like Intel's Tick/Tock cycle).

Either way, I'm pretty happy for the upcoming speed/battery life improvements the next versions should bring, and I think Apple did a great job with implementing the new split screen modes.

Saw this tweeted, this is interesting:
Apple has basically deprecated HTTP in iOS 9 and OS X 10.11. To use unsecured HTTP, you have to ask for an exception in your app manifest.

Kind of makes existing packet sniffing tools/techniques a little useless.

Yeah but built in window snapping I use every day. Just bump a window up against the left or right side and it docks on half the screen. Very convenient for multi-tasking.

If Apple makes it as customizable/robust as the "Spectacle" app (they probably won't) it'll be pretty sweet. Especially splitting windows vertically and horizontally via keyboard.. use those constantly.

Options (from the Spectacle menu bar):

A few years ago when that feature was big on like the Samsung Note and Galaxy Tablets I would always show it off and Apple folks would always say it was a silly feature and why would you need it on a tablet or phone. Not saying Apple isn't making it better but there's this cycle I've noticed where I call out a cool feature that Google or Samsung has implemented then years later Apple adds it to iOS.

Resolution was a big one. I remember way back in 2007-2008 I was raving about all the new smart phones (Sony specifically) with high resolution screens. Everyone was like "why would you ever need high resolution screens on a cell phone?!?". Haha. Same thing with laptops.

Apple was the first to actually implement resolution scaling properly, rather than just stick more pixels. Essentially the first "Retina" displays. I don't think any other phone had close to the resolution of the first retina iPhone anyway, you may be misremembering.

I'd still argue that floating video on a 4" phone is pointless, but makes perfect sense an an iPad sized device.

And implementation actually does matter. Android doesn't have floating video built in, so it's up to 3rd parties to make this happen, or manufacturers, which means it often only works within 1 app and a limited video selection. Since it's built into iOS, any app that uses the OS video player (which is pretty much every app) has native ability to float their video window.

Android could definitely do this first (and split views) somehow in certain situations through certain manufacturers, but iOS is the first to have it built in to the OS.

Early on when phones were 320 by 480 I was talking about phones with 720 by 480 and up resolution. Sure not the resolution of the first retina iPhone but people were still saying high resolution phones were a stupid idea when I was saying they were the future of phones.

My first laptop in 2003/2004 had a 1920 by 1200 screen. Scaling worked fine in browsers and most applications even that long ago (took some tweaking).

I understand how Apple is implementing and perfecting these things but all of them have been around in one form or fashion for quite some time. All I was commenting on was it's a cycle where I get excited about new hardware and software features years before Apple implements them and people get excited about them.

Oh yeah not saying it is. I agree. It's pretty universal. Back in 2002-2003 when I had a 320 by 480 internet connected palm pilot (Sony Clie) I had a long list of features that would be cool (higher resolution, multi-touch support, etc). It took 5-8 years for most of them to be implemented. It's more just me saying "I told you so!" to some people.

The split screen mode in el capitan is pretty well implemented. The fact that it's its own desktop makes it a little nicer than how Windows does it i think.

I had a web conference split with a browser of relevant info, but could just swipe over to my other workspaces without disrupting any window positions or anything like that... very smooth.
