as I remember, investigations for a secret clearance only go back for 5 years. you don't have to have an unblemished record--it's really more about "can we trust you with secret information".

debt and shitty finances are actually some of the most common things people get clearances denied for. that, or, like, stuff you could be blackmailed for.

TS and TS/SCI are significantly more involved.

Blemishes on your record aren't nearly important as not lying about that shit. When theyre assessing you, they are looking at your character in terms of being able to handle sensitive information correctly. Also, making sure youre not succeptible to bribes (like youre in debt and might want ro sell information.

Thats why these government agencies were warning abouy looking at wikileaks cables w/o authorization. Because doing so means that youre not handling secret information apprporiately, and thus, you could be jeopardizing your ability to obtain a clearance...

I was so excited when I got my first clearance, I thought I was gonna get to look at all kinds of cool shit.

Nope. I got to look at the bridge radars, and bring coffee to the guys in CIC.

Then I had to do the whole damn thing again, because apparently DoD is incapable of talking to DHS and finding out that I already had an open clearance.

^ Yeah that happened when I worked at NNSY in Portsmouth, VA.

The government is hilariously weird about it's security clearances.

Also I never looked at any confidential docs despite having the clearance. There were other levels of classification for shit you couldn't let people without a need to know look at. Shit that wasn't too important, but when combined with other information actually would have been quite nice to know.

It wasn't glamorous at all. Hope you enjoy your new federal job senor 'leg.
